Overview

Police Detective Devereux Gautier knows he's no hero.
He's seen too much and failed too many times. Now the homeless kids he mentors are dying and the only person who can help him find the killer is the woman who dug up his past to destroy him. Dev needs her help to solve the case, but he can't trust her and he can't trust himself around her, because she's the sexiest, most intelligent woman he's ever met.

Journalist Reghan Connor knows there are no heroes, and she's out to prove it on the air for all of New Orleans. Her latest debunked hero is Detective Dev Gautier, who hates her for exposing his mistakes. Now Reghan has been given the key to the murders of Dev's homeless teens, but how can she convince him she's not setting him up for another fall? As they work together to solve the murders, Reghan learns that being a hero is complicated and loving a hero can be downright deadly.

Now this was one hell of a good book. The synopsis implies that investigative reporter Reghan Connor and Detective Dev Gautier had a past love affair, the furthest it got before Reghan damn near wrecked his career and ruined his life, was a date and one hot ass kiss. Which made it better for me, I really didn't want the heroine to be some dirty skank that slept with him in then really screwed him. They are thrown together when Reghan has some info and insight as to why and what is going on with the murders. They both are still hot for one another and after spending so much time together they end up in some hot monkey lovin'. And thank gods, because something had to happen after all of the build up of how hot that damn man is! She finally comes to realize that the man she thought was no hero is, after all, one. Having been screwed over by a fiancee and her father leave as a child, she had made it her mission to prove that no man was a hero as she had believed of the previous men in her life. She also realizes that she has been in love with him since the beginning of their tumultuous relationship. It was easy to get into this book and fell in line of one of the fantasies I used to have when I was younger. The one where I moved to New Orleans and some how met some hot cajun/creole police officer that looks like Alcide from True Blood (Hum-in-ah, hum-in-ah, hum-in-ah). He has cuffs, we have some hot dirty monkey lovin'. He loves my crazy neurotic ass (and actually finds it endearing). We get married have some babies and live out our remaining days in a house in the Garden District. Hey, I read a lot of Anne Rice, I've gots to have me the house. Oh hell, if he looks like Alcide and there is true love and some mad monkey lovin', I would live in a shanty with the damn man.

Ok, let me say, that for the first time EVER, I guessed the bad guy and I was RIGHT!!! Hehehehe this never happens! Seriously! Also, I know I usually am all about everything fantasy, but being a Louisiana native, and a frequent NOLA visitor- yes we call New Orleans NOLA- I couldn’t help myself. Now, here’s my question for you… What if two people loved each other, and one of them COMPLETELY DESTROYED the other’s entire life? Yeah, that’s this story. Romance wise anyway. The mystery part of the plot is fantastic! It’s like criminal minds meets Law & Order I must say that it was so well written, I forgot that there weren’t any fantasy aspects. Heh, and new Orleans muggy, hot temperature is dead on no one understands heat until you go to Louisiana or Mississippi or Florida. Anywho, back on track lol! Dev is my hero! I feel terrible for his past and even worse for what Reghan put him through. Yep, she literally took him, threw him in a blender and pressed crush. And I didn’t think I’d like Reghan for what she did, until I literally connected with her. I know how abandoned issues can cause some serious crazy. You know, get them before they get you. Well, in this matter, she at least has her eyes opened that it should not always be this way for all cases. And their snarky comments to each other. I giggle! She finally realizes that she’s really attracted to him, and then even his hands and fingernails become a beautiful sight. Giggle again! Sorry LOL Anywho, I will say that if you are a fan of spicy but not trashy romance, with a fantastic mystery plot, and set in the most awesome city in the world, with a wonderful background array of characters, you will get it all here. Seriously, I may have to broaden my horizons and spread out to read romantic suspense once A while. 4.5 stars for me!! Now you go read it!

The action moves so quickly over the pages, you feel like you're riding in an old, beat-up, green Chevy. The tension is like a tightly pulled rubber band that you expect to snap at any moment. Mallory Kane holds nothing back. The heroine, Reghan Connor is tough, guarded, trusting no man and out to expose the truth. She learns that sometimes the truth is better left hidden. The hero is swoon-worthy. Haunted by his past, determined to make a difference, reluctant to claim the title Hero. Devereux Gautier. I imagine the deep, smooth, cadence of a Cajun accent in the heat of a New Orleans summer.
