Before colorful, hand-dyed yarn became trendy, there was Noro, the Japanese brand known for natural-fiber yarns in thoughtful, nature-inspired color palettes. This collection of patterns celebrates the 20th anniversary of Noro's popular Silk Garden yarn, a silk/mohair/wool blend known for its soft texture and vibrant color. The patterns are designed to showcase Silk Garden, often taking advantage of the long color repeats typical of Noro yarns to create a striped or multicolored effect. The results can be stunning, as in Jacqueline van Dillen's lovely Sunburst Shawl, knit on the bias using jewel-toned Silk Garden Sock. Techniques such as entrelac, modular knitting, and stranded colorwork also show off Silk Garden's lovely hues. Even cables and lace—not known for playing well with colorful yarns—feature in some of the projects. The collection skews toward advanced beginner/intermediate-level projects, and yarn substitutions wouldn't be effective since these designs rely on characteristics typical of Silk Garden, but there's much to explore here, with patterns suited to most tastes. VERDICT These are pretty accessories in prettier yarn, and knitters who love color but who haven't yet discovered Noro yarns are in for a treat.
