I found this book to be haunting, intriguing and beautifully written; just about the opposite of the previous reviewer! It's an unusual story, but that's part of what makes it so special. I loved the slight sense of foreboding, coupled with intelligent writing. The main characters are both maddening in some ways, but I felt pulled into their story from the first pages. Not a story for everyone, but I'm glad I read it.

I almost bought this book. So glad I didn't. I absolutely hated and could not get thru her earlier book, "Leave Before You Go," so I knew I didn't want to buy this one. I was interested enough to keep reading because it is obvious that the wife is off her rocker, but I wanted to know why. So I endured this slow-moving, confusing book. I'm not an idiot, but I just couldn't follow this book. I hated the husband, Tom. What a loser. None of the characters interested me, even the crazy wife. Although I think it is well written and the descriptions of Ann are well, very descriptive (and original), I hate the author's writing style. I like a style that is more clean and plain without all these long descriptions and back and forth from the past (since he is writing about his wife when she was alive) to the further past (the trip to Fiji, which was important in some way but I can't figure out why). So I kept reading to figure out why she is going crazy/what is making her crazy, despite the fact that every minute I spend on the book I am hating it, so imagine my irritation when the climax of the novel is completely incomprehensible. Apparently I am supposed to know why and what, but I couldn't follow the plot. It wasn't shocking (as advertised) because obviously she dies at some point, but why????!!!!! I guess that is the shocking part. I am going to see if someone wrote some kind of explanation on the internet. Hateful, annoying, irritating, stupid, boring book. I don't care what the critic on NPR said, this book is awful. I DO NOT recommend this book. Read In the Woods and The Likeness by Tana French. Extraordinary books. Superb writing. Excellent characters.
