Mit der Hilfe von Old Wabble, dem "König der Cowboys", will Old Shatterhand den geheimnisvollen Westmann Old Surehand aus den Händen feindlicher Indianer befreien. Später gesellt sich Winnetou zu ihnen. Im "Llano Estacado" kommt es dann zu einer schicksalhaften Begegnung. Die vorliegende Erzählung spielt Ende der 60er-Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts. "Old Surehand. Erster Band" wird fortgesetzt in "Old Surehand. Zweiter Band" (Band 15).
