Overview

Twelve-year-old Ollie Oxley is moving-again. His mom is starting another new job, this time at the Bingham Theater in Granite City, California. Moving all the time means Ollie has struggled in the making friends department, but he quickly connects with a boy named Teddy. To Ollie's surprise, though, his first friend in town is a little more . . . unique than those he's made in the past. Teddy is a ghost.

Befriending someone who lived during the famous California Gold Rush sure does make things interesting for Ollie. But when the school bully, Aubrey, targets Ollie and it looks like the Bingham Theater might close, the stakes couldn't be higher. Can Teddy and Ollie work together to take down Aubrey, save his mom's job, and solve a mystery years in the making?

What I Liked This is a spooky book, but it's manageably spooky for the age group. The descriptions of the places really jump off the page; you can see the crumbling Bing theater and the bubblegum pink house as plain as day. The details of the setting remind me of when I was a kid and my brother would drive us around in the Sierra Nevadas through these little mining mountain towns. In hindsight, it would have been fun to see if they were haunted! What I Would Have Liked to See Nothing. Great little book that had everything it needed! My Favorite! Teddy! He's such an adorable, sassy little ghost. It's nice to have a friendly, funny ghost in a book. Now instead of being afraid of a ghost in the house, my kids can't wait to befriend their Teddy! TL;DR 12yo Ollie teams up with a spunky yet forgetful ghost to find some lost gold so his family can stay in their home, but he winds up finding much more than he bargained for. P.S. I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley for my honest review. All thoughts are my own!

Part school adventure, part treasure hunt, part supernatural mystery, Ollie Oxley and the Ghost is a fun, fast-paced read. It's filled with humor, page-turning mystery, and great characters. Definitely worth its word-count in California gold.

This delightful middle grade mystery set in current day Northern California gold country is perfect for any kid or parent who likes a friendly ghost! Ollie Oxley is a clever kid who hates the fact that his mom makes him and his sister move so much, so when he meets Teddy, a boy who just happens to be invisible, and makes his first real friend, Ollie starts to find the courage to stand up to the school bully (one of many he’s dealt with, moving as much as they do) and run for class president—both things he never would have attempted at previous schools. When his mom’s job is threatened, Ollie and Teddy go looking for the titular lost gold, and after some twists and turns, the search concludes just as perfectly as I’d hoped! The mystery kept me guessing until the end, and Ollie and Teddy make for an entertaining duo—especially Teddy’s anachronistic jokes and Ollie’s reactions, which are icing on this ultra-cute cake of a book!

Ollie Oxley and the Ghost: The Search for Lost Gold by Lisa Schmid is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. This is a delightful middle school book with great characters, dialogue, plot, and mystery! I enjoyed it and I am not a middle grade kid! I think my 12 and 13 year old grand kids would love this book! Even kids younger than that but like I said, I would even like it! Suspense mixed with mystery and humor!

I loved this charming, yet important story about Ollie! Bullying is so prevalent, especially in middle school, so watching Ollie and his friends handle bullies is absolutely the best part of this book. The exciting gold hunt to save the theater and therefore his family's ability to stay is a perfect way for Ollie to save the day. Thank you for letting me read early!
