“Davidson’s latest novel is her best work yet. One Small Sacrifice is a fast-paced winner. Highly recommended.” —#1 New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben

“Twisty, absorbing, and deeply humane, it’s a thriller you won’t want to miss.” —New York Times bestselling author Megan Abbott

NYPD detective Sheryn Sterling has had her eye on Alex Traynor ever since his friend Cori fell to her death under suspicious circumstances a year ago. Cori’s death was ruled a suicide, but Sheryn thinks Alex—a wartime photojournalist suffering from PTSD—got away with murder.

When Alex’s fiancée, Emily, a talented and beloved local doctor, suddenly goes missing, Sheryn suspects that Alex is again at the center of a sticky case. Sheryn dislikes loose ends, and Cori’s death had way too many of them.

But as Sheryn starts pulling at the threads in this web, her whole theory unravels. Everyone involved remembers the night Cori died differently—and the truth about her death could be the key to solving Emily’s disappearance.

Alex Traynor is a former war photojournalist, back home in New York City, and severely suffering from PTSD. His fiancee, Dr. Emily Teare, seems to be the only one who can keep his nightmares at bay. Emily volunteers with Doctors Without Borders ... and has gone missing. Detective Sheryn Sterling is absolutely convinced that Alex has had a hand in his fiancee's disappearance. She believes that he was responsible for the death of his friend, Cori. Although ruled a suicide, Sterling thinks Traynor has gotten away with murder once before. Where is Emily? What has happened to her? Everyone involved remembers the night Cori died differently—and the truth about her death could be the key to solving Emily’s disappearance. A tautly women plot, a story line filled with twists and turns, and a cast of credible characters make this an auspicious start to a new series. Many thanks to the author / Thomas & Mercer / Netgalley for the digital copy of this suspenseful crime fiction. There was so much going for this book. It had so much backstory that I was sure I was reading a book in the series instead of the first. Alex was a famous photographer with PTSD from so many war zones. His fiancé is a surgeon who goes missing. The detective who believes Alex got away with murder a year before is sure Alex has struck again. It's quickly apparent that he did not. The story seems like it should be so exciting but I found myself forcing my way through it. I just couldn't make my self pick it up and when I did I had to reread pages that just weren't holding my attention. It would pull me back in and then sputter out again.

Nice start to a new series with a good protagonist in Sheryn and a just twisty enough mystery of what happened to Cori. Thanks for the ARC. This one has had lots of reviews so all I've got to say is that I recommend to fans of the genre and those looking for a new detective to follow. Looking forward to the next one!

One Small Sacrifice by Hilary Davidson was a page turner from the very first paragraph. I am so excited that this is going to be a series, and can't wait for the second book!! Alex Traynor is a war photographer who is suffering from PTSD. In the very beginning we learn that his friend Cori died when she fell from the roof of his building, but Alex can't remember what happened and he was accused of killing her. Now his girlfriend, Emily is missing and her case is being investigated by the same detective that investigated Cori's death. I almost always predict the ending of a book by page 50, this one kept me guessing for a long time. I just kept narrowing it down, as each plot twist was revealed.
