An otter arrives at a human family’s pond with a big surprise in author/illustrator Hansen’s picture book.

An unseen family in a gray house is always delighted when Otto, a river otter, comes to visit their backyard pond. A long winter passes with no sightings of Otto, worrying the family, and when the animal returns, they’re surprised to realize that Otto is a mother. They rename their frequent guest Opal and watch happily as she raises her pups. The otters have adventures, exploring as they grow: “Opal watches them very closely and squeaks loudly to show them her displeasure when they get too far away.” Eventually, Opal and her pups spend more time away from the pond, and the family hopes they’ll see them return—perhaps with new pups. Although the humans are the observers in this story, they play a distinct secondary role in it. Hansen fills the narrative with facts about North American river otters, discussing pup development, diet, and features such as special eyelids that allow the animals to see underwater. The text is accessible, although it haphazardly switches between present and past tense. Hansen’s gorgeously textured, brightly colored watercolors are the book’s highlight. The high-contrast illustrations capture the otters’ playfulness and frequently focus on the ways the otters are reflected in the water.
