When disgraced celebrity biographer Don Ruby is offered a contract with a reputable publishing house, he's sure there's been a mistake. He goes to clear things up with the actual writer in question, but finds him dead.

On impulse, he pockets the man's notes and embarks on the writing project himself-a biography of a once-famous horror film director. More specifically, the director's lost movie, The Unveiling.
