Overview

In this provocative book, author Leslie Leyland Fields explores with refreshing honesty the myths that can lead to unrealistic expectations and distract us from God’s purposes for our children and for us.

Why am I not a more joyful parent? Why aren’t my kids turning out as I expected? Why do I always feel as if I’m not doing enough for my children? Is Parenting Supposed to Be This Difficult? As a mother of six, Leslie Leyland Fields knows firsthand the insecurities and questions that come with rearing children. In Parenting Is Your Highest Calling, she tackles nine myths about parenting, including:

• Children make you happy and bring great fulfillment.
• You will always feel love for your child.
• Your success as a parent can be measured by your child’s behavior.
• There is one “right” biblical model for family life.
• Good parenting will result in happy children.

Through a close look at God’s own life as a parent as well as stories from real-life families, Fields highlights the transforming biblical truths that release parents from the grip of mistaken assumptions. Fresh, provocative insights will lead you to a deeper understanding of God and yourself– an understanding that lifts the weight of guilt and fear and frees you to love your children as God intended.

Includes “going deeper” questions for individuals, couples, or groups.

Prepare to be relieved and challenged all at the same time. Leslie Leyland Fields does a great job of releasing us from the guilt and pressure of parenting while challenging us to fulfill what our highest calling truly is. I rarely read a book on parenting that is a "page turner" but I found it difficult to put this book down. I was forced to look at some of my own preconceived notions and examine them in the light of scripture. While reading there were couples that came to my mind that I have counseled who need to read this book. Her scripture references are contextual and applicable.
I have always found it amazing how we can quote Psalm 139 to demonstrate how unique each of our children are at the same time we think there is a formula for raising children. This book demonstrates that parenting is as unique as each parent and each child. I strongly recommend this book to any parent who has ever had feelings of guilt. If you weigh every thing you do and wonder if you made the correct decision for your child's life, you need this book.

Where was this book when my children were growing up¿
A very wise woman once shared with me the phrase she often used with her children: ¿This is my first time experiencing this--just like it is yours. I don¿t have a tried and true method for parenting you, but through God we will both survive.¿ What wonderful advice.
Children do not come with instruction manuals. Neither do parents come with the wisdom to know how to handle every situation. Leslie Leyland Fields writes from experience. She looks closely at the nine myths of parenting:
1. Having Children Makes You Happy and Fulfilled.
2. Nurturing Your Children Is Natural
3. Parenting Is your Highest Calling
4. Good Parenting Leads to Happy Children
5. If You Find Parenting Difficult, You Must Not Be Following the Right Plan
6. You Represent Jesus to Your Children
7. You Will Always Feel Unconditional love for Your Children
8. Successful Parents Produce Godly Children
9. God Approves of Only One Family Design

Where was this book when my children were growing up? I felt so inadequate. They are now grown and still, at times, I wonder if I let them down. Fields writes in a simple, easy-to-understand style. There are questions for discussion and reflection. Parenting Is Your Highest Calling would make a great small group study.

I really enjoyed this book. It was so refreshing to hear from someone being honest about their struggles. It is tough as Christians, spouses, and parents to find balance. I highly recommend especially to the parent that is afraid they aren't measuring up. Nobody does, God is not done with us yet!

Parenting Is Your Highest Calling is a very honest, self-effacing look at parenting. With her superb writing ability, Leslie Leyland Fields tackles the myths of parenting and shows the reader, through God's Word a refreshing new approach to parenting. Leslie isn't afraid to admit to mistakes or misconceptions in her own life as a mother of six. She shows us how to face one of the most difficult jobs of our lives. She says what we all feel, but are afraid to admit, that we don't always feel adequate as parents. She doesn't claim to be an expert, but guides us to the one who is. Written in Bible study form, this book is a great resource for church study groups as well as personal home study. The questions at the end of each chapter are thought provoking and help us come to our own conclusions about our approach to parenting. Since parenting doesn't end when our children reach adulthood, this book would appeal to parents with children of all ages. An enjoyable read and devotional book.

Read this book slowly and thoughtfully. Take your time. Some of the chapters were so profound I had to reread them before moving on.
