Gr 1-4-This true story is told through the eyes of a five-year-old Japanese boy living with his family in Lithuania, in 1940. His diplomat father, Chiune Sugihara, issued travel visas for Jewish refugees against his government's consent in order to save their lives. The book is a fine translation of the English original that dramatically recounts the feelings of anguish and desperation of the Jewish people and the efforts and caring of Sugihara and his family. It is beautifully complemented by strong illustrations that portray significant passages of the story. An excellent addition to nonfiction collections and an inspirational story of courage and conscience.-Alexandra Gomez, New York Public Library Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
