About the Author

Christian Stückl was born in the German village of Oberammergau and grew up in the family’s guest house. He became absorbed in the Passion Play from an early age, and joined a group of villagers determined to reform the text and staging in order to project the Play to a changing world, and rid it from associations with anti-Semitism. Stefan Hageneier was born in Oberammergau and trained as a woodcarver. He was brought to the Munich Kammerspiele in 1991 as an assistant and became a skilled set and costume designer, including at the Bavarian State Theatre.
