Completing his three years in the Continental Army, Daniel Reid still has no desire to return home—not after losing the woman he loves to a British Captain—so he volunteers to ride south through enemy lines and deliver a message to Colonel Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. With his temper needing a release and a dark haired beauty finding her way into his broken heart, Daniel decides to join the Swamp Fox's efforts against the British. Little does he know the British still have the upper hand.

Lydia Reynolds has learned that love comes at a price, and she refuses to pay. Better to close her heart to everything and everyone. When her brother-in-law won't grant her passage to England, where she hopes to hide from her pain, New Englander, Daniel Reid, becomes her only hope—if she can induce him to give her information about the notorious Swamp Fox and his troops. When the British grow impatient and Daniel evades her questions, Lydia must decide how far to take her charade. The poor man, already gutted by love, hasn't grown as wise as she. Or so she supposes…

Until the truth is known, the muskets are loaded…and it is time to decide where true loyalties lie.

Angela Couch has written another stellar and exciting book! The Patriot and The Loyalist doesn’t disappoint. It will keep you riveted! It will keep you on the edge of your seat! It will make you wonder if she is truly loyal to the British or to the Patriots! This is one story you do not want to miss! And one you need in your collection! Lydia Reynolds is a determined and strong woman but she plays a dangerous game. What, do you ask? Daniel Reid is a strong Patriot, he is too trusting and noble when it comes to sweet Lydia. The gripping ending between Daniel and Lydia will leave you breathless! Well done, Angela, well done!! This was such an interesting story.. She was using him and he was using her for information. Mystery, intrigue and the harsh realities of war made this story full of twists and turns and some surprises of betrayal and deceit that I didn't see coming! Very good behind the scenes depiction of spies who were good at getting information but maybe living with the consequences of getting caught.

The Patriot and the Loyalist ( Hearts at War - Book 2 ) By: Angela K. Couch The Patriot and the Loyalist is book two in Hearts at War series by Angela K. Couch. It can be read as a stand-a-lone , but I would recommend that you read them in order. Ms Couch weaves a story full of mystery, action, twist and turns , that will have you turning the pages faster to see what is going to happen next. The story and the characters both were well written. Lydia is a very strong woman , but is she playing a dangerous game? If you love mysteries you will love The Patriot and the Loyalist. I received a complimentary copy of this book , but was not told that I had to give a positive review.

This fabulous book two, of the Hearts at War series, can easily be read as a stand-alone book, but you may want to go back and read book one, "The Scarlet Coat". I enjoyed the many twists, turns, surprises, intrigue, mystery, and gripping ending in this novel. Lydia Reynolds is a strong, determined character that plays a dangerous game. She is the last member of her family and wants to go to England where she can hide from her pain. Her brother-in-law, who inherited her father’s shipping business, refuses to give her passage on one of his ships. Therefore, she strikes a bargain with a British major. She will furnish him with information about the Swamp Fox for passage to England. Daniel Reid, a New Englander, is her only hope, but he is too trusting and too noble. He doesn't want to give her information that would endanger her. When Lydia realizes she is endangering Daniel's life, and the British grow impatient, she must decide her true loyalty. Daniel had lost the woman he loved so the romance builds slowly, and Lydia searches for the God her mother had known. I can't wait for the next book!
