Through the Khedive Palace, the novel conveys the neighboring regional situation, and the simultaneous international situation, from Tsarist Russia, to the Ottoman Empire, from France's lurking and England's stagnation, to the new state of Germany, and America, the ambitious emerging state, all of this through (Mazhar Choucair), the novel's hero and its line writer, a lecturer at Abdeen Palace, where he narrates everything he is contemporary with in conjunction with his mysterious past that haunts him, without effort or desire on his part.
