Penguin on Vacation begins with Penguin in a snowy scene — he is holding  snowball and also has a small pile of snow on his head. Penguin declares that he needs a vacation. But definitely not some place where there’s snow because Penguin has been there and done that! When Penguin sees a cruise ship in the ocean and a beach ball bobbing in the water by the shore, he decides he will go to the beach! So he packs his bag, takes along his new beach ball, and off he goes — he travels by ice floe of course! What follows next is a special story with great take-away lessons. The beach is not what Penguin expected and initially he does not have a good time. Yet he doesn’t get upset or cry or want to go back home. Penguin ends up making a new friend at the beach named Crab — Penguin ends up doing all sorts of NEW things and has lots of FUN. But all good things must come to an end — eventually we have to return home and say good-bye to new friends we made. BUT the story does not end here! There’s more and it’s quite sweet! My only quibble with Penguin on Vacation is that some of the non-narrative text seems a bit unnecessary. For example, one page spread shows Penguin sailing away on an ice floe — one hand holds a beach ball in his lap, the other is waving to a penguin on the shore. The narrative text reads: “Penguin packed his bag and headed north.” The non-narrative text (smaller in size and placed next to Penguin) says: “Good-bye, Grandpa!” Another example are the page spreads showing Penguin and Crab playing together — I don’t think it’s necessary for Crab to say what they are doing. In all instances, I felt the extra words take away from the emotion conveyed in the illustration. However, there are a few instances where the non-narrative text was appropriate and works very well. Penguin on Vacation is a sweet and thoughtful story — it may help kiddos prepare for what to expect while on vacation. Disclosure: I received a complimentary review copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. The opinions are my own.
