About the Author

Robert S. Dieter, MD, RVT, FACC, is a clinical assistant professor in Loyola University's Department of Cardiology. He specializes in the management of complex vascular diseases, routinely caring for patients with strokes, TIAs, and carotid artery blockages requiring angioplasty or stenting. A member of the editorial board of two medical journals, Dieter has written about new and potentially safer methods of treating blockages in the renal arteries.

Description: The walls separating vascular surgery, medicine, and radiology are finally beginning to break down, and as they do new approaches to education are emerging. This book is one such approach. It is a new multiauthored entry into the growing field of comprehensive vascular texts designed to appeal to everyone. It is almost certainly the most comprehensive collection of material devoted solely to noncardiac arterial health and disease ever assembled.
Purpose: The editors have succeeded at their goal of creating a book that is useful for vascular practitioners from many different specialties and backgrounds.
Audience: This epic tome (it's larger than the Braunwald I used as a fellow to learn the entire field of cardiology) will be valuable to residents, fellows, or advanced practitioners with specialty interest in vascular disease.
Features: The 53 chapters cover virtually every aspect of peripheral arterial disease. Some chapters are traditional (dealing with lipids, abdominal aorta, acute ischemia, etc.). Others deal with topics usually addressed in specialty-specific texts (CT angio, intravascular ultrasound, arterial diseases of the eye, etc.). A few chapters cover topics so narrow that they are rarely given their own chapter in other works (erectile dysfunction, nonembolic pulmonary artery disorders, steal syndromes, etc.). Finally, some chapters cover things that may be considered either "cutting edge" by advocates or "unproven approaches" by skeptics (brachytherapy for peripheral arterial disease, clinical assessment of endothelial function, etc.). The loose structure of the book manages to avoid excess repetition and allows the authors to focus on specific issues. Like all multiauthored books, there is variability in writing quality among chapters; fortunately, this book suffers less from this problem less than most. Congratulations to the editors.
Assessment: This is a good book with something in it for everyone. It is well written and edited, comprehensive, and very up to date.
