Pieces of Autumn by Mara Black

I wish I could tell you that I was stolen.

Kidnapped off the street in some third-world country, sold against my will, while a desperate family back home waited and prayed and talked about me on the news.

I wish I could tell you that, because then you might understand.

What really happened? I walked to my fate with my eyes wide open. But before you say I deserved whatever happened to me, you should know. I was desperate. I was alone. I was afraid for my life. You would have done the same thing.

I thought things couldn't possibly get any worse.

But then, I woke up in darkness, unable to move. There was only one thing I was sure of: I wasn't alone anymore.

And then I heard HIS voice...

Title: Pieces Of Autumn Author: Mara Black Publish Date: July 30,2014 I am not usually a reader of “Dark” stories, but this one had me captivated! And was not as dark as what I was expecting. The story takes place in the future where money is useless, (something I would have never imagined). The main character is a teenaged orphan named Autumn . Her parents were murdered and she is now living on the streets trying to survive, starving and running away from her parent’s killer, refusing to be found. In desperation she sold herself of her own free will to an organization called “Stocker”. She knew going with them meant selling herself, but hey she is not starving and can’t be found by the person that wants her dead. This organization educates and prepares hopeless young girls to be sold to the highest bidders as sex slaves. But Autumn is not sold, she is sent to Tate also known as “The Viper”, a man feared by those know in this organization. At one time he was a trainer of the girls. His job was to torture and break them in order for them to learn how to be submissive to their prospective masters. But this is not who he is any longer, he has changed, now fighting his split personality one the real him Tate and the other “The Viper” his dark half the one that wants to own Autumn. When he receives Autumn as a gift he does not know how to act around her so he tries to keep his distance in hopes of scaring her away. This is not going to work with her… she is stubborn and does not back down. His treatment of her is drawing her closer to him. She is starting to have feelings for him and she knows she should not be feeling this way but Tate too is starting to show that he has feeling for her also. I can’t say too much more without giving away the story and spoiling it for you. All I can say is this is a great book if you are OK with dark situations. The storyline is very well written the author did an awesome job for her first book! Kudos to you Mara! Looking forward to reading more of your books.

I wasn't sure what to expect from Pieces of Autumn after reading the synopsis. I remember feeling intrigued to find out who this girl was and what happened to her. Told from two different characters' POV, this novel was so much more than the synopsis leads you to believe.  Hints are dropped here and there that the world has gone to hell and now only the extremely wealthy have luxuries such as running water and electricity. Society didn't collapse too terribly long ago; Autumn, the main character, can still remember vividly what life was like before the collapse. I've never come across this in a dark romance before, and it made for an interesting backdrop to the story.   Spending several years living homeless, Autumn became desperate to stay one step ahead of the man searching for her. With her life in jeopardy from both the man searching for her and the dangers of living on the streets, she decided to trade safety for freedom. It's been said that you can't have both - to be safer, you have to give up some freedom. Autumn gave up all of her freedom for only a small bit of safety.  Autumn is given to a man named Tate, also known as the Viper. Their relationship is dark and twisted but also has moments where they understand each other better than anyone they've come into contact with for a very long time. I didn't understand why Autumn was so attracted to Tate right away without knowing him, and even she questioned herself time and time again.  She saw something in him that he didn't want her to see, and he did his best to hide it but it was too late. She already knew it was there.  I haven't thought of people as all good or all bad since I was a little girl. I know we're all a mixture of both with some of us having a little more of one or the other. Admittedly, that's a terribly simplistic way of explaining my view on human nature, but we're bad or good in degrees. Even people whom we see as truly evil started out as innocent babies. Pieces of Autumn forced me to examine not only the dark side of humanity but my own as well, and it was uncomfortable at times.  Pieces of Autumn couldn't have been a better title for this book. Autumn was in pieces at the beginning, and I'll leave it to you to find out if she's still in pieces by the end. This novel gave me much to think about while at the same time delivering a story that won't be forgotten anytime soon, if ever. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

OMGosh! I just finished this book and I LOVED it!! I could not stop reading. I wish I'd read slower though because now I'm sad it's over! Twisted but not so far twisted that I was ever tempted to throw my Nook across the room. The writing was superb and I can't wait to tead more from Mara Black!

Pieces of Autumn by Mara Black almost left me speechless. I would have happily punched anyone that tried to interrupt me while I was reading this story. It’s a little dark but not unbearably so. I thought it makes the reader want to take a good look at their darkest desires. It is sad that there are homeless kids that are taken advantage of in real life similar to what happens in the book. I found myself wanting to reach through my kindle and slap a couple of the characters in the book. They get theirs though. Autumn was hard to take at times. She liked when Tate was rough with her, but she also thought it was wrong. She would play nice one minute, and then let her spark come out and just leave Tate dumbfounded.  I give this book 5 stars***** because I thought it gave the right information, when it was needed. The story did not bore me at anytime and I was just dying to know why Stoker sent Tate the present. I hope to see more books like this from this author. She has me intrigued.

This story takes place in the distant future where money is just useless paper. Influence is what is powerful now. Autumn has given herself to Stoker. She has lived on the streets and starving since her parents were killed. She is taken to Tate. He was a headhunter for Stoker at one time. He use to gather people to break them so Stoker could sell them to people that want slaves, sexual slaves. It is a good story but was slow at times but it explained the past it those times. Can Autumn accept her future with Tate? Will he let her escape? It is a dark and sometimes painful to read but I enjoyed it. This is a first for me by Mara Black and I can't wait to read more from her.  **Copy provided by the author in exchange for my hones review**

A Dystopian Romantic Suspense Thriller!! I received an ARC eBook in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book I have read by Mara Black and it certainly won't be my last. First of all, let me preference my review by stating that I am not a typical fan of dark romance or violence but this book was so well written that I couldn't help but become enthralled by this fascinating look into this dark dystopian romance. There is profanity (lots of f-bombs) but it was in keeping with the overall darkness of the story. Tate and Autumn, two broken people, are thrown together in an horrific reality of survival in a dystopian world. Their story is about how love can grow even under the most unlikely of circumstances and pain. I was surprised how much I thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend it if you want something different and interesting and love romance!
