Powerhouse: A Coal Miner's Story Vol. I
Powerhouse follows Fred through various memories of growing up in a coal camp and surviving near-death experiences while working miles below the earth's surface. In an age where coal mining is viewed as a thing of the past, it is more important than ever to understand how and why this dangerous occupation supported so many American laborers. In warm, personable language, Fred describes the tight-knit comradery that formed the foundation of a coal miner's life, and the reality of how in a split second, their world could come crashing down.

About the Author

Fred M. Powers worked in some of the world’s most dangerous conditions as a coal miner in West Virginia. Having grown up in a coal camp in the 1950s, Fred understood from a young age what it meant—and what it took—to work in the Keystone No. 1 mine, one of the oldest coal mines in the country. After witnessing friends die from respiratory complications and his coal-miner father develop black lung, Fred knew that coal mining was not an easy job, but to provide for his family, he would do anything.
