Description: This 10th edition is an updated version of successful book. The pretest offers board-style questions to help students prepare for the neurology shelf exam and USMLE Step 2, and to succeed during a neurology clerkship. The book includes hundreds of multiple-choice questions arranged by topic. For many questions, there are detailed explanations for the answer options, both correct and incorrect. Some of the questions can be difficult to answer, but this is the point. By reading the explanations, readers learn the subject-matter.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to give students up-to-date knowledge to pass the neurology shelf exam and to be successful at a neurology clerkship.
Audience: The book is a helpful resource for medical students on neurology clerkships, and for students preparing for the neurology shelf exam and USMLE Step 2. The authors of the book are familiar with neurology clerkship core competencies and the book has been reviewed by medical students who passed the shelf exam.
Features: The book is a compact paperback that can be carried around in one's lab coat. Because of the question/answer format, the contents can be easily digested in small bites, which is easier than reading a chapter from a textbook during a busy clinic rotation. The book is broken down by subject-based chapters. Each chapter covers a particular topic and has questions and answers that formulate the learning of that subject. The key is the detailed explanations that accompany most of the questions and answers.
Assessment: The book format, size, and ease of use make it a useful tool for medical students. The question-answer-explanation format makes it easy to navigate and quickly learn a very specific topic or nuance. The book is not designed to be used as a single resource of knowledge, such as a textbook. Moreover, the questions do not reinforce or test what was learned in the book but provide the knowledge transfer themselves. It may help students feel confident and give broad review of topics without overwhelming. The explanations provide key learning points, but are not consistently applied. Most of the questions and answers have explanations. The book purports to incorporate the latest American Academy of Neurology guidelines, but some of the medical information is not up to date or the latest. The book is medically accurate, but there are parts that need updating such as headache classification. It takes time to flip back and forth between the answers and explanations, so it could be easier if the explanations were closer to the questions/answers. The questions are reviewed by students who passed the shelf exam. Overall, this book is an excellent resource for neurology clerkships and the shelf exam.
