I bought this in Singapore and I think the book has only been published in Singaore and Thailand. Private Dancer is the story of Pete, a tavelling writer and sex tourist, and Joy, a bar girl and prostitute whom he encounters dancing naked in the Zombie Bar.For Pete it is love, or at least lust, at first sight. For Joy it's just another foreigner to milk for money. The book is written in interview/diary style, with each character telling his/her own portion of the story, it's no great work of literature but it does build up into a decent examination of the bar girl / sex trade. The cultural differences and grevious misunderstandings are made clear by each party telling their own story.Pete falls in love with Joy, Joy doesn't exactly fall in love with Pete, but she does care for him in her own way. All Pete's friends warn him that a steady relationship with a pole dancing prostitute is going to go nowhere, but he seems wilfully blind to all their words of advice.People will do anything for love, and as the relationship spirals out of control and threatens to end in violence and bloodshed, even then Pete can't see the obvious end coming.Quite enjoyable, enough to keep me interested on a long plane journey anyway.

Great insight into the bar girls of Thailand. Story is well written and an easy read. In addition to the detailed account of Bangkok nightlife the story provides grat insight into the people of Southeast Asia. Entertaining and insightful.

Some have also called this novel The Bible of Bangkok and in many ways, I find that to be quite accurate;-) I first read this novel free-of-charge on Stephen's website and was so engrossed with it that I read it all in one very long session at my computer. After that, it was simply a matter of buying a copy as a mass-market paperback on my next trip into Thailand and I fell in love with the storyline as well as getting each character's point of view. If you've spent enough time in Bangkok or Pattaya or most other parts of the kingdom where farang men can meet up with Thai girls, you'll see that Stephen has essentially done nothing other than give you the complete truth on what it's like when farang men go after Thai bargirls. I've read this book many times in the States, Thailand, Vietnam and China and even though I obviously know what's going to happen next, I want more--it's like going to the scene of a car accident that you absolutely know is going to be a gory disaster to see but still you can't stop yourself from rushing towards the wreckage and all the blood--Private Dancer is the same way for those of us who have spent enough time in Bangkok after the sun has long since collapsed on the polluted horizon. Once again, Stephen, thank you for a great tale that is perpetually frightening;-)

An exceptional story that will keep you glued to the book till the very end. You get very involved with the characters and get a good feel of the city and the country life in Thailand. Writing style is smooth and flows easily.

You know how when you mesh with a writer's style, it's a match made in heaven? I like how Leathers writes and I've bought a few of his books. This one in particular was one of the better ones. This book was much higher priced before - now he's in the right range, but still he's at $5. I'd like to see the price drop to 99 cents like many of the fiction writers are doing. Wouldn't YOU? Buy it. Good read and half of Thailand has read this book already.

This book reads so true for those of us who know this side of Thailand. You'll fall in love with Joy and hate her and then feel sorry for her.
