John C. Flynn is an adjunct instructor in the Medical Laboratory Technology program at Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He has been in MLT education for more than 25 years and is the former Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania.

This textbook provides current and practical information for the student of phlebotomy. The text is divided into two basic sections: The Practice of Phlebotomy and Professional Issues. This is the second edition of a text first published in 1994. The intent is to provide a training manual for students of phlebotomy, whether they are just entering the profession or have been practicing for some time and wish to stay abreast of the rapid changes in the field of phlebotomy. In a clear, concise manner, the author covers the clinical, technical, safety, and communication skills used in the practice of phlebotomy and sample collection. Chapters on multiskilling and phlebotomy department management particularly enrich this text. The author meets his objective of providing a useful, informative textbook for students of phlebotomy. The author cites an audience of those just entering the field of phlebotomy and those who have been practicing in the field and want to be updated and kept current. The chapter on multiskilling shows the expanding role of the phlebotomist, who may now be referred to as a patient care technician, patient associate, or clinical assistant who performs other hospital duties in addition to phlebotomy. This text is appropriate as both a training manual and as a resource for students of phlebotomy. The author and contributors are experienced educators in both phlebotomy and laboratory medicine and have designed this book to meet the needs of the target audience. The first sections includes an introduction, plus chapters on anatomy and physiology, infectious diseases and their prevention, phlebotomy equipment, basic collection procedures, special collection procedures,complications of phlebotomy, and multiskilling for phlebotomists. The clinical and technical chapters are well written and easily understood. A sample Competency Evaluation is a useful addition to the technical chapters. Phlebotomy procedures are effectively illustrated with both photographs and detailed drawings. The chapters on infectious disease and prevention and on complications of phlebotomy address current issues with a thoroughness not usually seen in a text of this type. The chapter on multiskilling provides an overview of the many tasks now being assigned to phlebotomists in many healthcare institutions. In the second part, such topics as interpersonal communication, professionalism, phlebotomy department management, total quality in phlebotomy service, and medical-legal issues are covered appropriately and presented in a straightforward manner. Each chapter includes both an outline and review questions. The inclusion of chapter objectives would benefit both student and instructor; and while the glossary is quite thorough, definitions of key terms within the chapters would be an asset. The overall format is easy to read, with contrasting color used to highlight section headings, tables, and figures. The addition of an appendix on animal phlebotomy is unusual in this type of basic text, but serves a purpose in providing the phlebotomist with an overview of sample collection in veterinary medicine. This textbook is a competent presentation of the latest information for both students and other healthcare workers who perform phlebotomy. The author details the collection process, from basic anatomy and physiology to safety practices and equipment. Changes in healthcare delivery and their impact on phlebotomy are addressed by including a section on multiskilling. Procedures are presented in a straightforward manner, with step-by-step instructions and accompanying illustrations. The appendix on animal phlebotomy is well presented and not usually found in texts at this level. This is a basic training manual for phlebotomy, more useful as a student's manual than as an instructor's guide. The chapter review questions and sample phlebotomy examination are useful tools in preparing a student for certification.
