The Promise in a Kiss (Cynster Series) by Stephanie Laurens

Stephanie Laurens has enchanted growing legions of fans with her sweeping tales of the magnetic Cynster men and the women who love them. With this new novel, she creates her most irresistible story yet, the tale of Sebastian and Helena, the Duke and Duchess of St. Ives—the lovers who began it all.

Sheltered in a French convent school, Helena has little knowledge of men. But that changes one snowy Christmas Eve when she unexpectedly meets a mesmerizing Englishman who leaves her with a powerful kiss.

Grown into a stunning beauty, Helena cannot forget that forbidden kiss. Now, though, she must put aside her dreams and marry, an obligation that takes her to London. There she is determined to meet Society's most eligible bachelor, Sebastian, Duke of Ives, a man sworn never to wed. But when they are introduced, Helena is shocked...for Sebastian is none other than her wild Englishman.

I loved this story. It was funny, romantic, sexy and both Helena and Sebastian are truly believable characters. What I couldn't swallow was that a true alpha male Cynster who vows to claim his woman, and love cherish and protect her, later in life chooses to be sympathetic to ANOTHER woman over his love of his life??? That is in no way romantic. Sebastian won me over but I couldn't forgive or get over the fact that this story portrays him as the perfect hero and lover, than years later he betrays and destroys his promise of love all over some stranger's plea for one night of passion??? It wasn't like he and Helena had not met yet or this pity lay happened before they were married and in love. He had been married for 5 freakin years and was apart from his wife AND child for less then four weeks and he couldnt keep it in his pants?? That was bad enough but he made a child with someone other than the woman he professes to love. Nothing sours a love story like infidelity. It was hard to block this whole unsavoring episode from my mind while reading this captivating story but I have to be honest and say that even though we learn in Richard's story (Scandal's Bride) that Sebastian didn't emotionally betray Helena the fact is he betrayed her physically which in my book is just as bad. Kudos to Helena for her treatment and unconditional love of Richard, and accepting him whole heartedly into her family. I couldn't give this book a five because of that sole indiscretion. I'm sorry but I wish Stephanie Lauren would have written the "scandal" in a different time. I cant believe that this great love affair could warrant what happens in five years or how a proud headstrong woman like Helena could have accepted her husband's by blow so easily and without any confrontation. No woman is that much of a saint! Especially for someone who found a love connection as profound as these two supposedly did. If Sebastian felt sympathy over another human beings plight good for him, but nothing excuses him from what he did. There is a million other things the powerful St. Ives could have done to help this other woman but sleeping with her and then explaining his betrayal away by claiming it was pity that caused him to do this isn't one of them. The Promise in This Kiss turned out to be short lived apparently and thats why this only gets three stars. I perfer reading about the HEA that actually last AFTER.

I had read the first two Cynster novels and had hoped that the author would redeem herself in this book on why he had an affair that produced another child. I had a difficult time reading this knowing that at some point in their lives he cheats on her. Had I not read the other books first I probably would have enjoyed this more.

Stephanie has redeemed herself with this book. It introduces us to Helena and The Cynster who started it all. Simply beautiful.

This is definitely one of the better Cynster books. The storyline is captivating, and the characters are delightful. However...if you have read the later Cynster novels, you'll know that Sebastian eventually is unfaithful to his wife and produces a son from this affair - Richard (Scandal). Knowing this, the book is rather disappointing for me. If Sebastian loves his duchess so much, as he is apparently depicted to in this novel, why would he cheat on her? The author does not address this at all, as I know many readers wish her to.

Only one question. Stephanie never tells how Sebastian passed on in any of the suceeding novels. Helena is usually mentioned in every book but nothing at all of Sebastian who remains my favorite througout. What happened. LORRAINE

This book is half as long and costs half again as the others. From the previous comments, I thought the book would include the story til after Sebastion's birth and the love affair and SCandel's arrival, but all you get is a rundown of a local minister's diary. The author must have run out of words. As to the two treatises that followed, they could have been saved for a fan website. The explicate love scenes are most of the foreground for the background of the story. The story is good. For a woman who states that she 'trusts'; Helena has a lot pf doubt about Sebastian's ability to carry out his word.

Stephanie Laurens captured my attention & kept me reading far past bedtime. Plot is vibrantly strong, hero and villain well-matched, characterizations and motivations believable. This book has been on my mind often since completing it. Definitely recommend it!

I am a very chronological person and always try to read a series in order. When this one came up I was glad Stephanie included it and put it where she did. By this time, we know the Cynsters and we know Helena. It was great fun to go back and read her story, which of course we knew already was a great love story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
