Overview

Punished for Purpose by Lauri Burns

Punished for Purpose is a compelling true-life story of abuse, hardship and inspiration-the vivid tale of a beaten child turned prostitute and heroin addict who could only reconcile her tragic existence as punishment for sins committed in a past life. Close to the ultimate self destruction, she is guided by thirteen people, virtual angels, each of whom crosses her path at exactly the right moment to lead her back to the light. Far beyond coincidence, she can only view it as a sign that her life was meant to be, that she was returned from the darkness for a purpose: To rescue those left behind, to save as many of America's throwaway children as her time on earth will allow.

So much of Laurie's life story resonates with me! I'm a grateful addict/alcoholic who needed this book at just the right time! A must read if you've struggled with abuse in your family and now find yourself walking a path of healing!

Although troubling it is the first Book that really takes a look into an adicts life through an adicts eyes. It also helps the adicts family and friends begin to understand the awful hold it can have on a person. Well worth your time to read.

Literally the majority of the book talks in raw and rough detail about the horrible things she's been through and witnrssed (in great detail). She talks excessively about even mundane details of events, such as someones hair or clothes, and seems to list every person she ever had a friendship with on the street. It isnt until the last few chapters that she discusses her work with foster children. I wish she would have focused on that primarily. I applaud her for turning her life around and helping these children who needed her. I would have loved to read about that instead. Hopefully she'll write a book that's more about her experiences of being a foster mom.

Punished for Purpose is the story of teen advocate Lauri Burns and her struggles with abuse and drug addiction. After surviving a hard life on the streets, prostitution and living from pillar to post with her young daughter, Burns found freedom from her addictions and deliverance from her abusive past. She accepted the grace that was always present in her life. Burns discovered that her life, with all the pain and heartache, had a purpose. "If you had only fed the dog, it would have been different (p. 362)." This was the answer Burns' father offered when she finally confronted him. She had endured physical and emotional abuse under his hand from three-years-old until the age of fourteen when he had her committed to a psychiatric hospital. Her deliverance came not in her father's words, but in the act of confronting him in the safety of her therapist's office. Burns ended her free fall into despair that day and began what became a remarkable climb to a successful, fulfilling life. The writing in this book is explicit. Burns has survived horrible acts of violence from the brutal beatings by her father to the untold rapes she endured as a young prostitute. Her descriptions of the paranoia she experienced while using cocaine are equally as frightening. This is the part of Burns' story that is not easy to read. If you are sensitive to other people's pain you will suffer along with Burns through these stages of her life. You will need to put the book down when the images her writing conjures up become too real. But you will come back to the story. You will come back because the dust jacket tells you who Burns is now-a corporate executive, an inspirational speaker, and a foster mother-so you know there is a happy ending. But you would return to this book even without this knowledge, because Burns lived to write about her life; to share it with those who have walked her path and those who have not. And as you make your way to the portions of Burns' journey that are built on love and positive action, you will recognize, as she did, that her entire life is a gift. What Burns' accomplishes with her life after she has forgiven her father for the abuse and forgiven herself for the drugs and prostitution is the obvious bright spot in the book; but if she had not lived such a violent and painful life Burns would not have the ability to foster unwanted children. And she would not have been led to advocate for teens who have been emancipated from the foster care system without money or support or even a shot at an education. Through her non-profit organization, The Teen Project, Burns and her supporters are saving teens from the same violent life she survived. Punished for Purpose is the story of an incredible woman who is living proof of the power of forgiveness. This book demonstrates that even a life that is broken can be rebuilt. And that every life has a purpose. I highly recommend it.

Reviewed by: Gary Sorkin, Pacific Book Review Title: Punished for Purpose Reading about a child being repetitively beaten by an abusive alcoholic father is very disturbing to say the least, but what's worse by far is being that child. Lauri Burns tells firsthand in "Punished for Purpose" amazingly detailed recollections of the abuse, the repetitive beatings, the physical and mental trauma she endured as an infant and all throughout her adolescence, and how she overcame her demons. Lauri Burns has a confessional style of honesty in telling her story revealing details most people wouldn't want known. She maintains a progression of events, a timeline if you will, that rationally describes how she descended into a dark world of drug abuse, prostitution and criminal behavior. If it was not for the honest, first person, detailed sequence of events with uncanny recollection of feelings, one might believe this could never happen. It certainly did happen. As the book begins with Lauri in her stateroom on a cruise ship, tying the pages of her memoir together for the publication of this book, the reader has the knowledge she obviously doesn't die in her book. Overdosed drug addicts or murdered prostitutes don't live to recant their deathly moments and write autobiographical memoirs. So when reading how close to death she found herself, one may think the suspense of whether she lives or dies is a moot point - we know she makes it. As a compliment to Lauri's storytelling skills, the suspense she musters is indeed riveting to the reader. Knowing she lives through her events does not distract from the seriousness of the circumstances she endured. Witnessing the obstacles Lauri needed to overcome; the addiction she needed to cure, and the monster inside she needed to quell, reveals the inner strength of character of a truly extraordinary person. Lauri Burns learned at a very early age the art of survival, and survive she did. "Punished for Purpose" is about the life of a person, the recovery and survival of Lauri Burns. It's about her journey to sobriety, with the help of people placed in her life just at the right time. She tells of the teachers and angels that pick her soul up off the street and put her on the path to become a role model, foster mom, and an inspiration to us all. Brought to the depths of hell on earth, her prayer to God for help was her last act of desperation to survive. A prayer she had used before, but now, this time, really meant it. Lauri Burns portrays the complexity of her experiences and presents readers with more than just a salacious page-turner, but a story of resilience, redemption and forgiveness. She poignantly traces how a struggling teenager learned not only to believe in herself, but love herself. I don't think anybody that engages themselves as a prostitute grew up thinking, "Someday I want to become a prostitute." Instead, for whatever reasons, they get sucked into the trade. Lauri's contribution to organizations like "The Teen Project" help these people get out of the business and find a better way of life. Young adults, whether troubled or not, need to read Punished for Purpose so their eyes will be opened to a dark world existing right outside their door. A world comprised of people in plain sight yet living in a different dimension.
