Description: This book provides "average" sequential photographs of all bones and joints of the immature skeleton from the neonatal period until the cessation of growth. This remarkable accomplishment was made possible by advances in digital imaging and the large number of images archived on PACS.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an atlas of normal skeletal maturation. The innovative user interface of the software component of the accompanying DVD provides a sense of the variation in growth patterns.
Audience: The atlas is intended for practicing and training radiologists and for all those who use radiographs as part of their practice, and it will be useful to residents and registrars in orthopedic surgery.
Features: The 600-page book and accompanying disc demonstrate what skeletal x-rays look like at a given age. What is truly astounding is the new direction of "averaging" and variability at any age. This provides an incomparable database for physicians who require assistance in interpreting x-rays of the immature skeleton and in differentiating the normal from the abnormal.
Assessment: In terms of the book's usefulness, nothing could depict this better than Dr. John Caffey's statement that one must first know the normal before one can recognize the abnormal.
