Rattletrap Car by Phyllis Root, Jill Barton

"A picture book that passes the fun test with flying fizz." — BOOKLIST

It’s hot. Hot, hot, hot! So Junie and Jake and Poppa and the baby want to go to the lake. But can they make it there in their rattletrap car? It doesn’t go fast, and it doesn’t go far — but with the help of some razzleberry dazzleberry snazzleberry fizz, a beach ball, a surfboard, and a three-speed, wind-up, paddle-wheel boat, they’re off to the lake where it’s cool, cool, cool! Phyllis Root’s wonderfully inventive wordplay and Jill Barton’s spirited, expressive illustrations make this a read-aloud road trip to remember.

I'm 15 years old, and to this day, I haven't found a children's book that has enchanted me like this one. When I was around 9 years old, we gave our copy to my neighbor (who was about 3 at the time); I'm pretty sure I cried. This book is probably one of the reasons I love to read, and I recommend it to anyone and everyone. It's the Harry Potter for young children (absolutely magical), and I can't wait to share it with my children when I grow old.

Charming and fun. Easy to memorize, my three year old takes great pride in "reading" it to me.

This story is full of wonderful language. It has sounds and rhythm that capture a child's imagination. They are inspired to predict the next problem and how it will be solved as the family tries to escape the heat by going to the beach in their broken down car. My grandchildren had me read and reread it, joining in on the repeated sounds and phrases, even the one-year old. It is delightful. Phyllis Root is a talent. For the very young I also recommend her Flip, Flap, Fly. She really knows how to use beautiful language to engage children in a story.

This is a fantastic repetative rhyme story. I have 3 boys ages 2-6yrs who LOVE this book and request it every chance they get. Should have gotten it in hard cover as the front cover is already wearing out from use. A really enjoyable story.

I first read this book to my oldest daughter when she was 2 or 3 years old and we borrowed it from the library. Now's she almost 6 and she still remembers it! I can't wait to read it to her again and share it with her younger sister and brother. This is a wonderful story that always kept her attention from start to finish and then she'd want to read it all over again! It's one of those stories that I don't mind reading 20 times in one day! Buy it and enjoy it!
