吳蠻是第一位北京中央音樂學院的琵琶演奏碩士，也是1989全國傳統樂器競賽琵琶第一名的吳蠻，自1990遷美以來已經是聞名世界的演奏家。她把中國的琵琶介紹給西方世界，把琵琶融入西方交響樂，弦樂四重奏和室內樂，並與世界各地民間音樂和各種藝術形式結合。吳蠻在2010年榮獲《美國藝術家獎》，又在2013榮登《美國音樂》年度演奏家，這是美國音樂界最高榮譽，是近百年來首次給予傳統音樂家的榮耀，也是音樂界對吳蠻終身成就一個正式的認可。
《美國音樂》如是說：「吳蠻是一位當代器樂演奏家的典範。更重要的是，她的工作是西方古典音樂大步進化過程當中的一部分。」
