About the Author

Dr. Thomas J. Divers earned his DVM from the University of Georgia and completed an internship in large animal medicine at the University of California at Davis. Dr. Divers returned to the University of Georgia for a residency in large animal internal medicine and ambulatory practice and later worked for 2 years as an assistant professor in the large animal medicine and ambulatory practice at the college. Dr. Divers then moved to the University of Pennsylvania for 10 years, where he was an associate professor of large animal medicine and served as chief of the section of medicine at the New Bolton Center of the University of Pennsylvania. Currently Dr. Divers is Professor of Medicine and co-Chief of the Section of Large Animal Medicine at Cornell University. He has been the recipient of teaching awards at three universities, has received the Educator of the Year Award from both the AAEP and ACVECC and recently received the Cornell University Hospital for Animals Distinguished Service Award for service to referring veterinarians. He is a diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. He is co-author of three textbooks, has authored numerous book chapters, and has more than 190 peer-reviewed scientific publications. Dr. Divers is currently consulting editor of Veterinary Clinics of North America-Equine Practice. Dr. Divers' current research focuses on newly discovered hepatitis viruses in horses. Other research activities have included bacterial and toxic causes of liver failure in horses, equine neurological diseases including equine motor neuron disease and equine protozoal myelitis, equine lyme disease, equine leptospirosis, diseases of the urinary system, and advances in internal medicine and critical care for horses, foals, and dairy cattle

Description:This is a rich memorial to the late Dr. Rebhun written by competent people who knew and worked with him. In addition to a tribute by Dr. Frances Fox, the 16 well illustrated chapters cover diseases of dairy cows, an appendix provides relevant contact information, and a companion DVD contains examination and diagnostic information indexed to pertinent pages of the text.
Purpose:Although this book focuses on diseases of the individual dairy cow, the editors acknowledge that the practice of dairy medicine is migrating toward population or production medicine and take this trend into consideration. It uniquely blends practical applications and evidence-based medicine.
Audience:The book is valuable for all students of dairy medicine, from those in bovine medicine classes to the professor teaching those classes, for residents in the field of dairy medicine to private dairy practitioners.
Features:Part I of the book covers clinical examination and assessment of the cow details therapeutic and routine procedures. Part II consists of 16 chapters dealing with diseases using a body systems format along with miscellaneous infections and toxic and deficiency disorders. Two additional units contain an appendix of information sources and description of the video clips provided on the DVD. All chapters are superbly illustrated. In addition, the DVD provides over 50 diagnostic and examination illustrations and case studies indexed to specific pages of the book.
Assessment:This is an excellent book for anyoneinterested in the health of the dairy cow, and a fitting tribute to a departed, respected colleague that advances the compilation of information about diseases of the dairy cow. Initially, one is prone to compare this book to others covering large animal medicine, but it is difficult to establish a peer comparison. The thrust of this book, its organization, the practical detail, the illustrations, and the connectivity between text and DVD make this a somewhat unique must-have book
