Redan Ridge by Michael Renshaw is the ninth volume of the ambitious Battleground Europe series devoted to the Battle of the Somme. Renshaw¿s book is a superb work, offering clear summaries of the military actions which took place during one week of pure hell in November 1916. Renshaw uses contemporary maps to explain the British objectives day by day. His choice of photographs shows these objectives to be almost obscene intellectual exercises. Renshaw quotes from personal recollections of the participants to evoke the feel of the battle from the soldiers¿ point of view. The Battleground Europe series is intended to serve as self-guided tours of the battlefields, and Renshaw includes a lengthy guide to the Somme area near Redan Ridge. The book provides suggested walks, contemporary and modern photographs to orient the reader, and several practical tips to help make touring the battlefield an informative¿and sobering¿experience
