Description: This is the fourth edition of a review resource for the National Board of Respiratory Care credentialing exams. The revised outline format mirrors the new NBRC exam matrix. Also revised are the resources on the companion website. This previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The purpose is to prepare readers to successfully complete the Therapist Multiple-Choice and Clinical Simulation credentialing exams. Given the recent change in these exams, coupled with the fact that many respiratory care college programs use this book for exam preparation, this revision was needed.
Audience: The audience is respiratory therapy students and graduates of accredited respiratory therapy college programs who are seeking to take the NBRC national credentialing exams. The author is unquestionably an expert in the field.
Features: Each of the book's chapters is dedicated to a specific topic, such as oxygen and medical gas therapy, management of the airway, ventilator management, neonatal and pediatric respiratory care, respiratory medications, etc. Chapters begin with a pretest of 10 multiple choice questions like those found on the exams. They continue with a review section that addresses the chapter topic as well as exam notes, questions, examples, and figures. They end with study questions (answers are in the back of the book) and a bibliography. The book is concise, easy to read, and complete. The author states that the book and website together provide over 800 multiple-choice and open-ended questions. However, I was unable to get to the website. When I used the provided access code, the website was very slow to load and repeatedly timed out.
Assessment: This excellent review is highly recommended to respiratory therapy students preparing for the NBRC credentialing exams.
