Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, autor de Rimas y leyendas, no llegó a cosechar el éxito literario en vida. Lo habría tenido más fácil de haberse plegado a las exigencias retóricas de la poesía de su tiempo y al realismo imperante en la narrativa. En cambio, eligió escribir lo que realmente le interesaba y no apartase de su compromiso de autenticidad y de sinceridad como creador. Quizá por eso su obra sea una de las más originales e in¬fluyentes en la historia de la literatura española.
