Shines an insistent and brilliant light In the 13th century, the Sufi poet Rumi befriended a mysterious wanderer named Shams Tabriz. Perhaps the central event in Rumi’s life, this relationship fueled many creative endeavors -- including a provocative and groundbreaking series of poems reflecting on the numerous meanings of friendship and love. These poems, rich in beauty and spiritual insight, make up the first half of the stunning new collection Rumi: Soul Fury. Compiled by renowned Rumi translator Coleman Barks, these translations capture the raw power of Rumi’s words and convey his universal celebration of love in its most meaningful form. The second half of the book is composed of the sayings of Shams Tabriz, which are expressed with an ornery and fierce intensity. It is a form of expression that is honest, clear and immediate, and coined by Barks as “soul fury.” Shams heals with "bitter medicine," while Rumi is kind and gentle in his teachings. Rumi: Soul Fury shines an insistent and brilliant light on how friendship and love can transform your life. -- Vicky Thompson, New Connexion Journal
