Description: This review book is an excellent question bank for preparation for ABSITE and written boards. It contains over 800 questions divided into chapters by topic, covering a range of material that pairs seamlessly with chapters from Schwartz's Principles of Surgery, 10th edition, (McGraw-Hill, 2015). Questions cover topics from a range of basic science and clinical scenarios that have been updated from the previous edition to reflect the most up-to-date practice guidelines. The book emphasizes high-yield topics dedicating more questions to those areas.
Purpose: There are many ABSITE review books, but providing one directly referenced to a core surgical textbook is essential. The questions and well-detailed explanations with references to the main text make it a very effective study aid.
Audience: The target audience is general surgery residents preparing for ABSITE. However, although ABSITE preparation is the primary focus, the book also could be helpful for those preparing for written boards as a good source of questions with accompanying explanations. The authors are from several different academic institutions and range from respected staff physicians to senior surgical residents.
Features: The book is divided into two parts, basic considerations and specific considerations. Basic science surgical topics are covered well. It is a review book only in the sense that it reviews the various primary topics through the accompanying explanations. Those looking for a review book with bulleted, high-yield facts should look elsewhere.
Assessment: Overall, this is well-structured and referenced book that is a strong source of questions on high-yield ABSITE topics.
