About the Author

James Lear is the nom de plume of a prolific and acclaimed novelist. As James Lear, he is the author of The Back Passage, The Secret Tunnel, Hot Valley, The Low Road, and The Palace of Varieties. He lives in London. Straight Up "This might make a nice change-of-pace for erotica fans and mystery lovers alike, so if you want a book that packs heat, grab this one." —Dallas Voice "It's exciting, compelling and a rip roaring read of a story. I'll definitely be reading more Dan Stagg mysteries." —The Romance Reviews "This dazzling, fast-paced, roller coaster of an adventure story does not disappoint. With plenty of scintillating twists and turns, smoldering sexcapades, and the provocative, darkly-humorous narrative of Dan Stagg at its wheel, this is action/adventure that takes you places. Deep into the dark, seedy underbelly of the human mind and then deeper, into the vulnerable, soft places of the human heart. Top all this off with a visceral and tender ending and you’ve got what I would call a hole-in-one winner, one that I can’t wait to read again and again." —Rainbow Book Reviews

I am not impressed with these novels. Mitch Mitchell lives in a gay fantasy world, in which almost every male character he encounters is gay or wants to have sex with him, and he with them. If the books were set in an alternate gay universe, this make sense. In the context of these mystery plots, it does not. I made the mistake of ordering and reading this book and the first in the series at the same time. Had I ordered just the first book, I would not have ordered this one. Yes, the mystery here was rather complex and had strong echoes of Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express" but the good news ends there. If the reader wants scene after scene of m/m sex, it would be cheaper to buy many of the inexpensive gay sex books available. For the price these books are, I don't recommend them.

I am a huge fan of Agatha Christie, and I have to say, I wasn't sure how I would feel about The Secret Tunnel given some of the other reviews. BUT James Lear quickly won me over with his beautiful prose, well-paced plot, and endearing (is that the right word?) characters. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's definitely mine! Definitely recommend!
