One of the rare times where my unfamiliarity with the earlier titles in the series have affected the enjoyment of the read. The fifth book in the Rookie K-9 Unit series carries underlying suspense/mystery threads forward from earlier titles while we are dealing with the immediate story of Ariel and Tristan. Ariel is a teacher, pregnant and with an air of mystery. She’s in the small town of Desert Valley after leaving Las Vegas after her husband’s death. While all of that is on her plate, the town is beset with a rash of crime and it hasn’t stopped. Tristan is an officer with a burden, his teen sister is a student of Ariel’s and is in the middle of her own teenaged moments. Everything that one would expect from a 14 year old with loss and anger issues comes out – usually directed at him. And when Tristan and Ariel start to form a friendship that just may have some notes of romance, even if Ariel and Mia get along, it’s not easy. So – what was here did reveal a solid connection with Ariel and Tristan, and the relationships that they both had with Mia ring solidly true. Additionally, Tristan’s dog Jesse is wonderful and those moments are clever. But there was SO much going on from the earlier books that a reveal and answer came, but meant little to me in terms of the whole story arc. I’m sure that those familiar with the series felt it worked well, but there are still so many elements unsolved… I just focused on the relationship and left the rest alone. Best for those who have read the earlier titles in the series, I may find some downtime to grab those titles and start from the beginning. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Secrets and Lies is the fifth book of the Rookie K-9 Unit series. All are written by some of the very best authors. While you will want to read all the books, it is not necessary to have read the first four novels before reading this one. Secrets and Lies can certainly be followed and enjoyed as a stand-alone novel. The action begins immediately. Widowed teacher, Ariel Martin, has returned to Desert Valley to have her baby and to start over in a safe, quiet town, When she is attacked after school and then at her home, the hope of safety and peace fly out the window. Rookie K-9 officer, Tristan McKeller, has his hands full with working nearly nonstop to solve a string of crimes and raising his orphaned teenage sister, Mia, who happens to be one of Ariel's students. Tristan is drawn to Ariel and vows to protect her. Are the attacks on Ariel related to the town's unsolved murders? Is Ariel's ex-husband still alive and making good his threat to get rid of her and the baby? What does Mia know that can shed some light on the crimes in Desert Valley? The action is fast paced. You will be flipping pages furiously. Characters are well developed and believable. As always, Shirlee McCoy does an amazing job of combining faith, love, and suspense. I can't wait for Shirlee's next book and for Book Six in this series! Susan Simpson

In Secrets and Lies, we have Ariel who is pregnant and a teacher at the local school. Someone is trying to kill her and rookie canine officer Tristan and his dog Jesse are trying to protect her. Tristan also has a sister that he's raising after their parents died. The suspense was well done. I started figuring out some of it but there was definitely some great plot twist and surprises in the book. I cannot wait for the final book and I won't ruin any surprises to let you know who they're going after in the final book. I received this book free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Suspense rules the day here as we get to know the intriguing characters that McCoy develops here. I really enjoyed the continued development of the overarching plot of the series while this novel takes us on an adventure all of its own. Subtly vivid descriptions bring this world to life as a sweet romance brings the characters together. The unique plot brings readers and characters together in a suspenseful yet clean novel that alternately had me in suspense and smiling at the sweetness of the characters. I really enjoyed how the characters in this novel were developed. Their individuality worked in with the way that they get to know one another. They were the type of individuals who invited readers into their lives for the short while that we get to know them. All in all this was an enjoyable, sweet, clean romance with a dose of suspense. I would definitely recommend it to others. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

A great new instalment for the series I have been following since the start. There are suspense and danger coming from a few different fronts, and keeping the K-9 team busy, looking for clues and keeping their loved ones safe. Ariel and Tristan were sweet together. They obviously cared for each other, and even though both of their lives were utter chaos, they somehow managed to insert themselves into each other's life so firmly, there was no other choice, but to give the attraction a chance. I liked how they interacted together, how they helped each other, how concern Tristan was about the baby, and Ariel about Mia, Tristan's sister. It was like they were meant to be together, and instant little family was formed when they were in each other's presence. I enjoyed them as characters, they were both easy to like and relate to. I wish their faith would have had more place in the story, not just their activity at the church. The suspense had some tense and dangerous moments through the tale. Some of it was little predictable, but the story held interest nicely all the way to the end, wondering how and if the culprits were caught. There's one more book in the series, can't wait to read the grand finale, and to find out the motives of the killer. This story was a great, entertaining mix of threats, peril, dread, and terror, teenage parenting, and a budding, gentle, and tender forever kind of love ~ Four Spoons

This is book 5 in the Rookie K-9 Unit series, however I believe it is a stand alone book. This is the first in the series that I have read and I had no problem keeping up. There is probably history with some of the background characters that I missed but nothing to keep me enjoying this novel. If you enjoy police, K-9 type novels you will enjoy this one. It is full of murder, mystery, suspense, and romance. Ariel Martin is a sweet loving teacher who is trying to start over, yet is her past catching up with her or is it something completely different. When she is forced to spend time with the handsome K-9 officer will she find that she can trust men and maybe it will be possible to find true love? Tristan McKeller does not have time for romance. He is a loving brother and dedicated police officer. While trying to find the balance in his life with all the murders and things going on in his small town, he is not sure what to think of his feelings for the beautiful teacher. Will he be able to solve the mysteries surrounding her before it is to late, and is there a chance at a future for them? I was given a copy of this novel from net galley for my honest opinion.

4 Stars This is the 5th book in the series. Some big clues about the overall mystery is learned in this book. So one you won't want to miss. Somethings in this book I could guess were going to happen way before revealed. The reason why they happened I did not guess. There was plenty of drama, action, danger and romance. There were a lot of good people that stepped up to help when they saw a reason to. Ariel Martin is eight months pregnant. She has moved back to small town after living in Las Vegas, NV. She is teaching summer school. Her ex-husband asked her for a divorce before she found out she was pregnant. She is all alone in the world. K-9 officer Tristan McKeller is raising his 14 year old niece after his parents died. He is one of the rookie police officers that was kept on after graduating to help solve all the murders in the small town. Ariel is alone in the school waiting for Tristan for his sister's parent teacher meeting. When someone else comes in and starts shooting at her. Tristan and his K-9 dog chased the guy away. That is not the only time someone tries to kill her. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I was given this ebook to read for free by NetGalley and Harlequin. In return I agreed to give a honest review of Secrets and Lies.
