Kristen Heitzmann is a master of her craft. Her style will prove to be a classic of our day. Her poetic words entice until you become part of this adventure of suspense, romance, tragedy and, thankfully, a bit of comic relief. The lives of Lance and Rese intertwine in unseen, multifaceted ways. Rese, hardened by her past, seeks peace in opening a bed and breakfast where the land gives life to wine. Lance pursues a mysterious family quest while serving as her chef/maid/gardener. He voices her thoughts before she feels them, but is he real? Is the God he shares real? Two needy people searching. Along the way, there is a long-lost diary, a skeleton, and a seductress... along with a dog who rides a motorcycle (not by himself, of course ;-), an elderly neighbor with watchful eyes and heart, and tempting Italian cuisine. It's an amazing journey. Go for it!

The story line AND the characters were totally great. The thing that would keep this book from being "over the top award winning" for a christian novel -- would be the romance part. Seemed that the author wanted to make sure it appealed to the romantic readers --consequently it got bogged down in kissing and sexual tension. The characters spent a bit too much time "thinking" -- for page after page. Bottom line -- NOTHING she wrote was "wrong" but too much of some things. Serious readers want less fluff. Still in all I would recommend it especially to the younger women and the ones who want decent romances.

Love love love this book. Some complain about the sensuality between Rese and Lance, being this is Christian fiction. But I didn't think courting/kissing/physical attracton was sinful. And these temptations make the characters easy to relate to. I love the way Lance applies the book of Isaiah to his own motivations, and continually tries to seek out the Lord's guidance, failing, trying again, just like most of us. The plot is very interesting, the characters charismatic, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Loved this mystery romance. Couldn't wait to get the next in the series.

I really enjoyed this book and was eager to read the next books in the series to "solve the mystery." I have read other books by Kristen Heitzmann and have not been disappointed with the story lines in any of them. This is a great, wholesome read set in the California wine country. The descriptions of the area make me wish I could visit there sometime. The underlying mystery makes it a great read.

This is an absolutely wonderful book. I felt as tho I was in the story myself, looking forward to the sequel.

I will read more by this author. A love story, christian, mystery. 450 pages of story. No sex but some inuendo. Mild violence. I wish the hero had not been so perfect, the best friend so abused and the book a little less preachy. All that aside, this was a pretty good book. I hope Harriet Klausner will grow up someday and quit spoiling books for other readers. She seems like a spiteful, mean, lemon sucking, old woman, without much joy in her life, wanting to take other's pleasure away. I would recommend this book to readers ages 16 and up. AD

Nice story, ...Another Inn keeper.. needing some help... Good book, well written, hard to put down... Nice description of: personages, location, emotions. I love the Free Fridays books, as it forces you to be an eclectic reader, and when a gem as this book id offered... It is definitively a TREAT !

I loved the story line however i think the author missed a good opportunity by adding the physical tension. I liked the characters however, i think i would have liked Lance bringing Noona to the burial.

This was a great book!  I had already read the second one in the series, and was curious to see what came before.  I have loved everything I have read by Kristen Heitzmann, as she knows how to tell a story with the greatest details that make it completely real, and this story was no exception!  Now I look forward to reading the next in this series!

As a book that makes you think, this one is tops. I love the characters and the plot. I look forward to books two and three. I picked this because I thought it would just be a "fun" read, but the depths of emotions can hit home. I am a Christian and have been going through some crisis in my life. This is not a self help book, but it does make one think.

I found this to be a great book. I was very intrigued. Heitzmann is a great writer so much so that I wanted to be a part of the book. Believe me when I tell you, if the characters were real with and there was a third proposal and Rese didn't say yes I'd be shouting " I'll take him honey!" We all know the struggles of the flesh, but in my opinion Lance is a great example of a christian man trying to find his way in the world. As temptations arise, Lance is able to resist. He did much better than some real life Christians would have done. However, God is a God of mercy and grace. The series was great and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

I really enjoyed this book. The right amount of mystery and suspense to keep me turning pages. Great christian story. One previous review stated it had to much touchy, feely for the main male character being a christian, but I don't agree. Christians are human, they hug and kiss, and this character showed great restraint in not letting things go further than that and get out of hand.

I was impressed! I reserve judgement any time I read something by an author I have not read before. But this book - the entire series - grabbed me from the beginning and never let go. The characters are deep and real. You see the doubts and struggles. You root for them and cry for them. You feel their joy and pain. I highly recommend this book!

I loved this book. Loved the details that made me feel like I was there myself! I loved the banter back and forth between the two main characters--made it seem like normal people instead of a "perfect world". I loved how God was incorporated in the book as well. It showed that people aren't perfect and have not so great pasts but they can change...and still aren't perfect but try to do their best. It's really a quick read because once you get started, it's hard to put it down! Highly recommended!!

Secrets ¿ that is the name of this book and this story was filled with all kinds of secrets! I won¿t give any of the secrets away, but will tell you a little about some of the characters in the story. But before that, I must say, pay attention, to the first couple of chapters, because a lot of history is taking place and you need to understand the ¿jump¿ in time as you begin this book.First there is the main lady in the story, Rece. She has grown up trying to be the best carpentry person she can be to make her carpentry Dad proud of her. But she has decided to start over again and has bought a old villa in the wine country and is restoring it as a bed and breakfast. She is tough lady to get close to, but deep down, she is yearning for acceptance and praise. Then there is the leading man, Lance. What a great character! He knows how to cook and reading about his dishes made me ¿drool¿ and wish for what he was making. He is in search of something for his grandmother and he ends up answering the add as a cook for Rece¿s bed and breakfast, because what he is looking for is somewhere on her property. He tries so hard to break through Rece¿s tough exterior. I loved it when he helps her ¿stress¿ at times by just taking her in his arms and giving her a good ¿ole¿ romantic kiss. Rece finally starts to share some of her secrets with Lance, but the problem is Lance does not reciprocate by sharing his. So when Rece realizes she has not been told the truth, she wants nothing more to do with Lance. There is also the feisty tell-it-like-it-is neighbor lady Evvy who doesn¿t pull any punches, and Star, Rece¿s friend from childhood who has a hard time knowing what true love and friendship really are. I enjoyed the story a great deal and I am getting ready to read the next book in the series and see what happens next with Rece and Lance and their relationship.

Lance Michelli leaves his grandmother's sickbed on a quest to discove what is it she so desperately needs him to find. This leads him to an old villa in Sonoma, the villa his grandmother used to live in, but now it is owned by a young woman who neither knows nor cares about his mission. He gets a job at the villa, but finds the owner Rese Barret a force to contend with, and her own impending storm could sweep him up as their sparring creates a fierce and uncomfortable attraction. As romances go, this was well done. The gradual uncovering of past secrets interwoven with the ups and downs of the romance works well to keep the readers interest.
