A Separate Reality: Further Conversations with Don Juan by Carlos Castaneda

"A man of knowledge is free...he has no honor, no dignity, no family, no home, no country, but only life to be lived." —don Juan

In 1961 a young anthropologist subjected himself to an extraordinary apprenticeship to bring back a fascinating glimpse of a Yaqui Indian's world of "non-ordinary reality" and the difficult and dangerous road a man must travel to become "a man of knowledge." Yet on the bring of that world, challenging to all that we believe, he drew back.
Then in 1968, Carlos Castaneda returned to Mexico, to don Juan and his hallucinogenic drugs, and to a world of experience no man from our Western civilization had ever entered before.

I think if you take some of the statements out of context and just apply them to yourself, whether the story is completely honest or not, the book and the ideas don't seem so bad

o This book proves itself again and again. New books keep coming out that validate it in one way or another. This book is about `seeing¿ the spirit world, and so much has come out in the years since about what it means to see¿Barbara brennan carolyn myss mark rich donna eden jack angelo etc etc etc¿.castaneda is the original! Shame those who say he lies ¿ they then go out and buy books all about the reality of what he wrote about a long time ago.

This book really opened my mind to a potentially different reality. Carlos seems quite perplexed with Don Juans antics and Don Juan equally seems to be enjoying himself at Carlos's expense. It is interesting, opening the question, 'Is this possible?' I take a lot of what Castaneda says with a grain of salt but I do consider it.

A good read. I liked this book. He talks about some really interesting stuff. I don't like the use of the hallucinogenics however. Seems like a crutch to me.

Castaneda is a pioneer in the evolution of consciousness of man. In this book Don Juan teaches 'seeing', how to look at the world in a new and expanded way.

Having grown up in the rual south west , I knew when I first read this book in the early 1970s , that what I had witnessed as a young girl hiking in the mountains and deserts of New Mexico was as real as the city lights of Albuquerque . A Seperate Reality is just the beginning of a wonder - filled journey that will change and illuminate a persons awareness forever.

Knowing many méxican families and their traditions and beliefs, this book explained and expanded on what my friends have expirienced. Because I know how real brujos are in méxico, Don Juán's teachings totally changed my point of view. Reading this book was life altering and I reommend it to anyone who is open minded about things not always being what they seem....after u read this book u'll never look at animals the same.

This was the first Castaneda book that I read, it was a good beginning, but as a novice some of the words had no meaning to me. I was still on the fence, at the time, as to how to view the overall validity of his works. The crossroads are really in Ixtlan, that is what seperates the adept from the critic. This book, and the first, have led many to believe that these books are all about hallucinogenics. I believe that at the time he wrote this, Carlos was equally as lost to the truth of what he was writing.
