About the Author

Mr. C. R. Benstead, a graduate of Cambridge University, has been both soldier and sailor. In the First World War he was mentioned in despatches after the controversial Passchendaele battle in 1917, and won the Military Cross in the fighting near Amiens that followed the great German offensive in 1918. His book Retreat, written against the background of the ill-fated British Fifth Army, created world-wide interest.

At the outbreak of the Second World War he was Meteorological Officer of the aircraft-carrier Furious, in which he continued to serve for over two years and he finished the war on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief, British Pacific Fleet. After retiring from the Navy, he was, at one time, Senior Proctor of the University.

Midnight water lapped at the hull of the shipwrecked boat. Broken planks floated aimlessly among the wreckage, all of the salvagable supplies rescued long ago.
A quivering, soaked, dirty magenta hoof stepped out into the firelight, followed by a scraggly yellow mane and fearful blue eyes.
The pony crept from its hiding place, eyes locked to the sizzling food roasting on the fire. The mare's eyes followed the blackening peach skin, the sweet scent leeching into the air with a whisy cloud of smoke.
Her sunken stomach grumbled hungrily, attracting the brief attention of a pea green stallion.
The mare gasped silently and ducked back into the shadows. She slipped up and around the fire and ponies, heading for the woods behind them.
A rusting chain clanked against a fallen log as the mare pulled herself over it, a similar collar digging into her scrawny neck.
She sat down for a moment, gasping and puffing for breath. She had to get as far from the pirate crew as possible before they realized her escape the next morning.
She closed her eyes for a minute. When she reopened them, a pair of orange eyes stared directly back. They seemed to float there before the mare realized it was a black pony before her. A pale gray mane fell over its shoulders, braided in strands.
The magenta mare began to scramble backwards when a cold spear tip met her back.
The pony's orange eyes shone with triumph and cold humor, his crooked grin revealing a slew of shining white teeth.
