A Thrilling New Romantic Suspense from the Genre's Newest Star

Piper McKenna couldn't be more thrilled that her prodigal brother, Reef, has returned to Yancey, Alaska, after five years. But her happiness is short-lived when Reef appears at her house covered in blood. A fellow snowboarder has been killed--but despite the evidence, Reef swears he's innocent. And Piper believes him.

Deputy Landon Grainger loves the McKennas like family, but he's also sworn to find the truth. Piper is frustrated with his need for facts over faith, but he knows those closest to you have the power to deceive you the most. With his sheriff pushing for a quick conviction, some unexpected leads complicate the investigation, and pursuing the truth may mean risking Landon's career.

With Piper waging her own search, the two head deep into Canada's rugged backcountry--and unexpected complications. Not only does their long friendship seem to be turning into something more, but this dangerous case is becoming deadlier with each step.

Second Good Book in a Great Series When Piper’s younger brother is accused of murder, the family pulls together to save him. Piper, however, cannot wait for the police to complete their investigation, so she investigates on her own, until Deputy Landon Grainger, a friend of the family, steps in to take over. Unable to let go, Piper joins Landon and they encounter the killer’s hostility. Piper is a great character, but Landon’s feelings of inadequacy toward Piper really make him interesting read. Pettrey has a way of making her characters come alive through their thoughts and dialogue. The entire family is an interesting mix of Christian and non-Christian, that is dealing with their emotions from the death of parents. The mixture makes the family seem a more realistic and absorbing read. The mystery-suspense part of the story is compelling as their investigation moves from Alaska to Canada and California. Great mystery, solid inspirational romance in a very believable story. If your favorite genre is inspirational romantic suspense, put this on your list. Received from NetGalley.

My review from (Christian book review site) If you ever wonder why I’m tough of books it’s because of this one. This book is so amazing that it makes all the other books I’ve read seem… not so great. I have only good words to say about this book. it makes you want to move to Alaska right away and join the McKennas. This isn’t really a suspense book, rather an adventure and mystery. Kathleen, another member of the inkwell review team, doesn’t really like any type of suspense, yet she loved this book. I love the atmosphere of this book, its very family oriented, all of the siblings are so close and so uplifting to read about. I can’t believe what a short review this is, but there’s nothing more to say except to READ IT!

This was fun to read, but I didn't find it as absorbing as "Submerged", Dani Pettrey's first book. She uses the same characters as she did before, a very likeable family of 20-something siblings, with values similar to mine, and she also makes allowances for their failings and foibles (which makes them very human and relateable). It's definitely not a book for guys, but for women who are looking for a mystery/adventure with wholesome characters and a Christian theme, this is a good choice.

Suspense and Romance at their best! Everything is ratcheted up in the second Alaskan Courage book – the excitement, adventure, danger, romance... I really liked the first book, Submerged, I loved Shattered, now I am really looking forward to the third book, Stranded. This book features the youngest McKenna, Piper, and older brother Cole's best friend, Landon as the heroine and hero. Landon has been in love with Piper since that incident last summer (Submerged), Piper is just starting to think a little differently about her 'adopted big brother'. Just when things might be making a change Piper's brother is accused of murdering a friend on the ski circuit. Piper knows her brother couldn't possibly commit murder but Landon is more cautious. Piper says he should feel more with his heart but Landon knows that can get you into trouble. Will they be able to get past the wedge driven between them and also find the killer? Piper and Landon are some of the most likable characters I have read about in awhile. Landon is a good guy just doing his job, while trying to protect Piper and nail the killer – whoever he is. Piper is a smart cookie, a little impulsive, and fiercely loyal. I think this book appealed to me because the focus was a little more on the suspense and slightly less on the romance. But believe me, this book delivers plenty of both! I could hardly put this book down. At the end of each chapter I kept saying “Just one more chapter, just one more”, and I really did mean it every time, honest! Part of the storyline seemed like it could have been taken from the headlines, it kept me glued to the pages. One of the threads in Shattered was how God will often tug the heart using family or friends and then use circumstances to finally bring the person fully to Him. To me, it also was a reminder that our lives should be a witness but ultimately it is God that brings people to Him. None of the McKennas beat their non- Christian family and friends over the head, but they also live their beliefs in every way. So the findings of this investigation are: GO find a copy of Shattered and start reading it NOW! (I won this book in a giveaway and am in no way obligated to review it. I have chosen to do so and all opinions are my own)

I have not read the first book in this series and you do not have to read the first book in this series to be able to get into this book. It didn't take me long to read it either because I couldn't put it down. This book got me hooked during the first chapter and it is a fast–paced story that is both a mystery and a romance. If you like this kind of books I think you will love this one.

I can't begin to say how much I loved Shattered. Before I started the book, I wondered if Dani Pettrey could top her debut novel, Submerged, which went on my all-time favorites list. Her second book far exceeded my expectations and left me wanting more. (Shattered can be a stand-alone read, but as another reviewer mentioned, you'll enjoy it much more if you read Book 1 in the series first.) Pettrey is a master at weaving suspense, romance, and mystery, and Shattered had plenty of unexpected twists and turns that kept me reading way past my bedtime. I've officially fallen in love with the McKenna family and can't wait to see where their future adventures take them!

I love these types of Novels. They are packed with adventure, mystery and some romance. I love series because you get to really know the characters. They are like watching a mini series on TV. But the most important part for me is the Christian angle. It's how I communicate besides my Bible Study through my day. God is in control and it is that communication with our Lord that makes me enjoy these books. I am so happy I found these kinds of books to enjoy. Thank you.

This mystery story has many surprising turns. The women of this family are headstrong and independent. This independence causes Piper to puts herself in danger as the plot thickens. The strength of faith and family pulls the McKenna family through. It is a story of discoveries and the adventure will not disappoint you!!

I usually don't read Christian books, but this was recommend by a friend. I expected a lot of religon thrown at me, but was pleasantly surprised. Recommed to those who like a godd romantic/mystery. I must admit I liked the lack of "f" bombs in so many of todays books. Will read more of this authors books!

I really love this book. I enjoyed both the romance and the suspense. The suspense is exciting and the story complex. The romance has an interesting storyline and is built upon the couple really knowing each other and not just upon a superficial relationship. I am always hoping to meet great characters in a novel, and this book delivers. The stories in the Alaskan Courage Series are all about the McKenna family, but with the focus on one particular family member in each book. It’s fun to get to know everyone better as the series progresses. Some of the characters are Christian and others are not. In this book one of the characters makes the decision to become a follower of Christ. That commitment is one of the focal points of the story. This book can definitely stand alone, but I suggest you read the books in order to get the most enjoyment out of them. I highly recommend Shattered by Dani Pettrey to those who like romantic suspense.
