Robert Barto – SYLVIUS LEOPOLD WEISS LUTE SONATAS VOL. 11 – Naxos Robert Barto has made something of a cottage industry out of recording the sonatas of prolific lute master, Sylvius Leopold Weiss. In this, the 11th issue of the series, Mr. Barto again uses his deep understanding and musical sensibility to showcase the variety and complexity that Weiss achieved in the simple and well-defined sonata form. Mr. Barto plays with a true virtuoso’s touch, beautiful, precise, and with great feeling; this is matched by the excellent quality of the recording’s engineering and the combination makes for a wonderful listening experience. Given an average of 3 or 4 sonatas per disc and that this one, the 11th in the series, contains sonata no. 92, it appears that we have much more to look forward to from Mr. Barto; kudos to the people at Naxos for their continued support of this project. Required listening for lute and guitar students and a must-have for fans of the baroque, “Sylvius Leopold Weiss, Lute Sonatas vol. 11” belongs on everyone else’s give-it-a-try list. Music like this is sometimes an acquired taste, but one that can quickly become habit forming. Highest possible recommendation - 10 out of 10 - Oscar O. Veterano
