This is the first book she wrote that I felt sick reading. The whole thing about being drugged and falling in love because of it, just bad. I thought the entire book was forced and a character as great as Smiley deserved better than this. I did not like this book in the least. I would not tell my friends to read this.

Very disappointing!!!! With his role in the other books, I waited anxiously for something special. What a letdown! It felt like this was just thrown together to fulfill the contract. The same sentiments are repeated over and over in this book. There was no character development and what little there was for Smiley made him seem like a wuss.

I have been faithful fan of the New Species Series from day one. I've actually been waiting for Smiley's story for a while now. I love Smiley and this book was a disaster. There were so many parts that repeated, the story line was subpar and the love scenes weren't even hot. I I have NEVER read a bad book from this Author. I kept hoping for a twist or something that would keep this storyline going. All I can say is that Jericho better be next, or else i will be so disappointed. He deserve someone special. Three stars only because Smiley was just as loving as I thought he would be. Otherwise, this book did not stand up to the quality writing of this author.

I was apprehensive about how Smiley's story would read. I always felt he was a great secondary character and didn't know if he could carry a story. I'm both pleased and disappointed in this book. Unlike some other reviewers, I didn't have a problem with the drugging because I felt that both Smiley and Vanna were aware and made decisions based on their attraction to each other (the drug just pushed them to act on it quickly). I just felt that the author skimmed the surface of the emotions and how they were developing. I'm also disappointed that we didn't see previous mates. There were definite places that I could have seen Joy the shrink and Kat the FBI agent adding to the story development. I hate when Laurann Dohner makes us fall in love with strong characters, only to never see them again. So, I liked the story and wished for more at the same time.

Even with Mrs. Dohner's health scare she was still able to put out 2 more good stories in her New Species series. This book had a different spin to it like the previous reviewer said, but that is okay. Do not want the same stories told over and over. The other few "bad" reviews I think are just expecting too much maybe. I think this story had enough steamy, intenseness, action/mystery, involved in the story to make it pretty good. Of course was not one of my favorites, but still a good story. Like everyone else hoping Jericho has his story and it is a really good and intense one (an a lot of pages). Glad too see her stories are a bit longer then some of the latest ones that came out for the $$. Smiley was over 200+ pages. Overall, a good story....***

I can't wait for more books by this author. Flame and Amanda, Book and Missy, and Jericho and Beth also there should be a Breeze and some one and maybe a female can birth a female baby? That would be awesome since all the male speciece mated to human bith male counterparts it seems only fare that the female species bith only females. Id like for all my favorite characters to get a h.e.a. it's only fair that Sunshine, Creek, and Breeze get their mates. And something needs to change with Kit. She's not bad just wild. This book was of Smiley and the date rape drug that Mercile's created was replicated handed off to Pollarise and then replicated again by a cult like church then distributed to human females to cause physical pain and sexual tension. There are so many ways this series can go. I hope she continues writing this series because I fell in love with a lot of these characters and can't wait to read more.

This one was great and i highly recommend. However i have read every one thus far and am wondering if you are done with the series? Some of your last few were not that great. It has been a couple years since writing one.....if you would like a about one of the humans have a female baby....could be very interesting....lets get back to the spice and humor

If you love the other "Species" stories, chances are very high you will love this one too! I'm really at a loss as to why this had so many bad reviews! I was eagerly awaiting Smiley and read a few reviews beforehand that made me think I might get letdown - I was not, at all! I'm only disappointed in myself for waiting so long in the fear I might not like it. I think some may not fully understand that Smiley is different than the other species - he isn't WEAK, he is a gentle soul. He is a different breed, and is more tender and emotional than some of the other species who rely more on their dominant, primal natures. NOT to say he couldn't get primal! I happened to love that he was more cuddly and a thoughtful caretaker as opposed to the demanding and more dominant nature of the other breeds (whom I also love! Valiant, anyone?!?). I love how the author gives such varied personalities of the different characters - it's part of what makes this series work. But I found him as protective and fierce as many of the other breeds. Some reviewers felt as thought they 'fell in love because they were drugged', however, I didn't see that as being accurate. They were drugged, yes. Smiley then helped Vanni through it and was as gentle and protective as he could be. They fell in love, but not BECAUSE they were drugged. That was just the unhappy accident that led to them knowing each other a little more quickly than a relationship would have normally progressed. But neither of them felt to great about it. They simply dealt with it and moved PAST it to discover something more - which blossomed into love! Most of the Species romances move into the love zone rather quickly - but it works! It is the idea of true mates. I'm sure they would not have chosen to meet that way.. but we rarely choose how we meet the person destiny may be holding for us.. I love this story overall, and I while I did feel somewhat bad at the way they met, sometimes you have to work for your HEA! I'd say Smiley & Vanni accomplished that quite well! Personally, I have loved this author for years, I adore all the Species I can get - and I CAN'T WAIT for more primates!!!

I love Laurann Dohner series. I especially love Smiley. He has been in previous books and his character stays the same. He is easygoing and not so intense at other NSO characters, but the book still has hot scenes. And I like that he believed her about not being part of the conspiracy. In True and Darkness the female character had to overcome their man/animals's innate distrust of humans. If you read and like Smiley try Haunting Blackie Its great.

Loved it! This book totally makes me smile. Storyline was well written, entertaining, act packed and steamy hot. Vanni and Smiley have a sizzling hot coming together being given the mating drug by one of the species enemies. Loved their chemistry and attraction. On the run from the species and the church that thinks the species are an abomination & want to use her as a pawn, Vanni ends up having to trust the species to keep her safe. Smiley gives Vanni the benefit of doubt when the other species believe she is guilty. He shows he is a total sweetheart but definitely can be a badass. Would definitely recommend. Can't wait to read more in this series.

I knew when I heard Laurann Dohner was finally giving us a Primate NS story, that this would be one of my favorites. It went way past my expectations. I truly, madly deeply LOOOOOOOVED Smiley! He was drool worthy, protective, didn't let anyone convince him otherwise that Vanni could of willingly harmed him. I loved how strong the romance was, and the constant action kept me glued to my ereader. I hope in the VERY near future to see more Primate NS stories! I am excited to finally see who Jericho's mate is and to find out if he will be just as cuddly and protective of his mate as Smiley is of his.

Not even remotely her best work. So why did she even like the guy? Characters did not fit well together and there is too much repeating of story points, such as her family not caring etc. Least favorite.

I love all Laurann's books. This one was no different. Kept me reading till the early morning hours! Maybe I'm not a finicky as other reviewer's, but I thoroughly enjoyed Smiley's story. Keep up the good work, Laurann. You are greatly appreciated.

As a devoted fan of Laurann Dohner, I found this book to be another great addition to the New Species series. I felt that the author did take a difficult start and turn it into an amazing story. Being drugged at a bar is sadly a very real possibility in the real world and I actually felt that by choosing that, it added a sense of the real world into the story. Some may find the start a bit hard to connect with while others like myself enjoy and appreciate it. If you are reading the series for the first time, I highly suggest go by order so that way you can bond with the characters and get to know the New Species on a personal level. Good reading and I hope that Mrs.Dohner will release more wonderful stories with my favorite characters!
