Ryder reached for another strawberry jelly–filled donut from the box and sank his teeth into the pastry. He moaned in ecstasy at his favorite snack.

"You've got powder on your lips," said Dmitri from the doorway.

Ryder grinned and kept chewing as he winked at his fellow Dragon King from over the four rows of monitors that ran in a large semicircle around him.

Dmitri chuckled as he came around the screens and grabbed one of the chairs pushed against the table where Ryder worked. Dmitri pulled the chair toward him and sat, his bright blue eyes directed at Ryder. "Anything new?"

"Nay," Ryder said and took another bite. He didn't need to ask what Dmitri was referring to with the war going on between the Dark Fae.

Dmitri blew out a breath and ran a hand through his short brown hair. "The Dark are suddenly no' interested in Dreagan? Tell me you doona find that odd."

"I find it exceedingly peculiar. But at the same time, I'm glad we doona have to worry about them right now with MI5 crawling around the estate."

Again, thanks to the Dark Fae releasing the video they shot of the Dragon Kings shifting into their true forms and fighting the Dark.

No sooner had the words left Ryder's mouth than the camera near the gift shop of the distillery picked up two MI5 agents patrolling the area. As if they would find clues of dragons while looking among the flora and fauna.

Ryder shook his head at them. MI5 were so intent on making a discovery that there really were dragons that they were acting like idiots in order to do it.

It'd been almost two months with the mortals on the sixty-thousand-acre property, and Ryder hated it. Every time he saw them it was a reminder of what the Dark Fae had done to the Dragon Kings' world.

Every day Ryder spent hours taking down the videos that kept popping up, showing them in their true form as dragons. Now the entire world was obsessed with dragons. And not necessarily all in a good way — MI5 was a prime example of that.

How ironic, since it was because of the humans that the Dragon Kings sent all the dragons to another realm thousands of years ago.

"This willna end anytime soon," Dmitri said in a voice laced with anger as he watched the MI5 agents on the monitor.

Ryder made a sound at the back of his throat. "With every video of us fighting the Dark that night that I take down off the Internet, a hundred more pop up."

"Ulrik is behind this."

"Or the Dark."

"Or both," Dmitri said.

Ryder nodded in agreement. "Someone sure wants to keep it out there for the mortals to keep seeing and discussing. I can no' keep it off YouTube, documentaries are all over the place, and the news channels continue to talk about whether dragons are real."

"We are."

Ryder cut him a hard look. "No' to the humans."

"What about all the dragon experts out there?" Dmitri asked sarcastically.

Ryder finished off the donut before he said, "Dragon experts my arse. They doona know what they're talking about."

"Which is what makes things interesting. Right up until they unearthed that dragon skeleton."

Ryder gave a shake of his head. "Doona remind me of that. I thought we'd gathered all of them. How the hell did we miss it? More importantly, how many more did we miss?"

"There were a lot of dragons killed in the war with the mortals. I'm no' surprised we missed one. Need I remind you we didna have a lot of time, either. We went into hiding here from the mortals."

"Aye. Just something else for the humans to have on us. It has to stop sometime."

Dmitri folded his arms across his chest. "I'm going crazy no' being able to take to the skies at night. First we were sentenced to only fly at night, and now no' at all. We're dragons, Ryder. We're supposed to be able to fly, but with the world watching us, we can no' even do that."

Ryder couldn't respond because his eyes were glued to a screen to his left. That camera was pointed to the parking lot of the distillery.

Since they were closed to tourists for the winter, the red Fiat had caught his attention for two reasons. One — because the car made him think of Kinsey. And two — because it wasn't one of the government cars the agents of MI5 drove.

Then he could only stare in shock when the car door opened and he spotted long dark hair pulled into a high ponytail. Kinsey. Even with her back to him, he knew it was her.

His heart missed a beat. What was she doing at Dreagan? Had she pieced it together? The last time he saw her, she'd been running from him. Ryder could've caught her, but he'd remained behind and killed the Dark Fae ravaging Glasgow.

Since he left her three years earlier, he'd watched her from afar, making sure she was safe. Weeks ago, he was the closest he'd been in years. Now ... now she was at Dreagan.

His palms began to sweat and breathing became difficult. Kinsey was at Dreagan. Ryder didn't know whether to be excited or furious — but he was leaning to the side of thrilled.

"Ryder?" Dmitri said his name.

He held up his hand to Dmitri, not bothering to look at him. As if Ryder could. His gaze was riveted on the woman he'd been in love with for four years.

Even as he began to think of all he would say to her, there was a niggle of worry. What if she was working with Ulrik or the Dark? What if they sent her there to use him for information?

Ryder's enthusiasm dimmed. He didn't want to believe Kinsey would do that, but a gut feeling wasn't enough. The world of the Dragon Kings was in chaos. There was no room for mistakes — of any kind.

Kinsey looked around the parking lot, her eyes searching.

He stared at her heart-shaped face, his heart clutching at having her so close again. How many times had he caressed her cheek or stared into her large violet eyes? How many times had he kissed those plump lips or simply held her as they watched a movie? Each time he saw her, she got more and more beautiful.

After a moment, she closed the car door and started toward the distillery. Ryder's gaze immediately lowered to her amazing ass and the denim that only showed it off more. The black blazer was casual over the white tee, but like always, she looked amazing.

Dmitri whistled. "Who's that?"

Ryder's gaze moved to the next screen and saw Tristan near the gift shop. He opened the mental link between all Dragon Kings and said his name.

Tristan responded immediately. "Aye?"

"There's a woman coming toward you. Her name is Kinsey Burns. Doona let her leave."

"All right."

Tristan left the link open as he smiled and greeted Kinsey after he turned the corner and saw her. Ryder could only watch the monitor and try to decipher what it was Kinsey wanted.

"She said she's here for the job we ordered with the new monitors," Tristan said. "What do I tell her?"

"I already installed those monitors weeks ago." Ryder hesitated. Kinsey was terrified of seeing him in dragon form. If she knew he was here, she'd never have come. Not after the way she'd looked at him. "Kinsey wouldna come here on her own. We need to know who sent her."

"You know her?" Tristan asked in surprise.

"Aye." It was something Ryder had kept from all those at Dreagan — especially Con. "Bring her to me."

Tristan agreed and severed the link.

Ryder sat back and blew out a breath, feeling a flutter of nerves. He laced his fingers behind his head and only realized then that Dmitri was still in the room. He slid his gaze to Dmitri.

"What are you up to?" Dmitri asked. "You know that lass. I could see it on your face. If you have Tristan bring her up here, you'll feel Con's wrath."

Ryder dropped his hands to the arms of his chair. "That occurs all the time, and I do know Kinsey. I'm no' yet sure why she's here. But I aim to find out."

"Meaning?" Dmitri urged.

"We were lovers three years ago. Until I realized that I'd fallen in love with her. I didna want anyone to know that our spell preventing us from feeling deeply for humans no longer worked with me."

Dmitri leaned forward, his brow furrowed deeply. "That was around the time Hal fell in love with Cassie."

"Cassie arrived at Dreagan right after I returned from Glasgow."

"All right," Dmitri said as he rubbed his jaw. "So you fell in love before Hal. No' a big deal."

Ryder lifted one shoulder in a shrug. "I suppose no'. No' compared to her seeing me in dragon form a few weeks ago when I was in Glasgow to protect the city from the Dark invasion."

"Oh, fuck."

Anger crackled through him every time he thought about how close Kinsey came to dying that night. If Ryder hadn't been there, she would've been taken by the Dark, her soul drained. "There was a Dark after her. I shifted into human form to help her. Unfortunately, she saw it all."

"And?" Dmitri pressed with a brown brow raised.

Ryder looked at the screens, following Kinsey from one to the other as Tristan walked her to the manor. "I've never seen anyone so terrified before."

"Of the Dark?"

Ryder wished. That night still haunted him. No matter how many times he thought over what happened, there hadn't been another way to save her. "Of me. I can still hear her scream before she ran away."

"So she doesna know you're here?"

"I doona believe so. She'd rather walk through the fires of Hell than be anywhere near me."

Dmitri sat there for a moment before he gave a slow shake of his head. "You're having Tristan bring her to you, are you no'?"

"I am."

"That ... could be a bad move."

"It probably is." In more ways than one.

But he wasn't going to pass up the chance to talk to Kinsey one more time. Perhaps he could explain everything. It was a long shot, but he was hoping to have that chance. He knew he'd never have her in his life as he wanted, but the thought of her fearing him cut him deeply.

His only hope was that Con didn't discover she was here until after Ryder had spoken with her. Because once Con found out about Kinsey, it wouldn't be long before Con learned she'd seen Ryder shift. That would lead to Con wanting to have Guy wipe her memories.

Ryder's thoughts halted when he heard Kinsey's voice with Tristan's as they approached. He wiped his mouth to make sure there was no more powder on it. Then he looked to Dmitri for confirmation that he had gotten it all.

Panic struck as he looked down at his clothes. He was in an old Def Leppard concert tee and his favorite pair of faded jeans. Not exactly how he'd have dressed had he known he might see Kinsey. But there wasn't time to change now.

"Here it is," Tristan said as he came to the doorway.

A second later Kinsey emerged. "Wow," she said as she looked at all the monitors. "I should've expected to see so many screens. I gather the security system here is state of the art?"

Then her gaze landed on Ryder.

He couldn't move as he stared into her violet eyes, remembering what it was like to hold her in his arms each night, to feel her lush body beneath his. The hours of conversations they'd had about the future and her dreams.

He'd missed her more than he thought was possible. It physically hurt for him to be so close to her and not go to her.

"What are you doing here?" she asked in a voice filled with shock — and worse — alarm.

Kinsey felt as if she'd been run over by a train. Her heart began to knock against her ribs. There was a rushing in her ears, and she was sure her knees were going to buckle at any second.

How was it even possible that she was staring into Ryder's hazel eyes, that were a beautiful mixture of green and gold? His blond hair was cropped short on the sides with a little more length on the top. It didn't matter if his hair was long as it used to be or short, he still took her breath away.

Was it his chiseled jaw or penetrating gaze? It could be his mouth and the wonderful things those lips could do to her. She knew there was a possibility it was his body, honed to perfection without an ounce of fat anywhere.

But he wasn't human.

She needed to remember that.

"What are you doing here?" she demanded.

For a moment, he didn't move as he looked at her. Then he sat back in his chair and swept his hand from one side of the room to the other. "This is my domain."

She was damn good at her job, but Ryder exceeded her talent by miles and miles. "You asked for me specifically. Why? Because you had to talk? You could've just called instead of going to such lengths."

"I didna send for you."

There were few times in her life where Kinsey experienced full-on, please-let-the-floor-open-up-and-swallow-me embarrassment. Today, right at that moment, was the worst she'd ever suffered — to a degree that nothing would ever compare.

She wanted to shrink away and disappear, to stop looking into his hazel eyes and trying to figure out what was going on. What did Ryder mean he didn't send for her? Someone had. She didn't just show up on a whim.

The room began to tilt. Kinsey blinked rapidly. She wouldn't faint. She'd never fainted in her life, and she certainly wasn't going to do it in front of Ryder. Hadn't she experienced her embarrassment quota for the next forty years?

Beside her, Tristan cleared his throat. "Kinsey, I think there might've been a wee bit of a mistake."

"There's not," she said and glanced over her shoulder into Tristan's dark gaze. "And I can prove it."

Kinsey pulled out her mobile phone and unlocked it before she went to her e-mails. She was scrolling through looking for the assignment she'd received last night when a chair squeaked.

Her gaze snapped to the man sitting near Ryder. How hadn't she seen him? Just like Ryder and Tristan, she could tell he was tall by the way he dwarfed the chair.

He gave a nod to her with the corners of his bright blue eyes crinkling slightly, as if he found the entire situation a tad amusing. Which didn't put him in her favor at all.

The man was handsome, same as Tristan, but not devastatingly so like Ryder. Which was a good thing because Kinsey could barely think with Ryder near. She didn't need two more disturbing her.

"That's Dmitri," Ryder said.

Dmitri's dark head bowed again. "Hello."

"Hello," she responded automatically. Kinsey suddenly felt like she was being caged in despite the fact that Ryder and Dmitri were sitting. All eyes were on her, waiting to hear what she had to say.

She shifted uncomfortably as a sudden thought struck her. Ryder was a dragon. Were the others?

Her heart missed a beat as fear shot through her. What the bloody hell had she walked into?

"Kinsey?" Tristan urged.

She found herself looking at Ryder. In his hazel depths she could see that he knew where her thoughts had taken her and why she was scared, yet he said nothing. As if he were giving her time to take it all in and calm down.

Calm down. She nearly snorted aloud. Like that was going to happen.

After finding the e-mail and pulling it up, her hand trembled when she handed the mobile to Ryder over the monitors. Their fingers brushed, and she sucked in air at the sizzle that raced along her skin.

Her nipples hardened instantly. She hastily looked away, but she found both Tristan and Dmitri watching her carefully. All she could hope for was that they didn't see how much Ryder affected her.

Hell, for that matter, she hoped Ryder didn't know how he shook her.

She was scared of him now, but that was getting mixed in with the desire he always brought out in her. It jumbled up inside her, making her unsure of which one she felt more.

Fear. It had to be fear.

Ryder set aside her mobile on the table and tapped the black metal tabletop. Instantly, a keyboard appeared. It was integrated into the table, the keys emitting a bluish glow to highlight them.

She almost rushed around the screens to take a look at such technology, but she managed to stop herself. Those keyboards were in the works, but as far as she knew they were years from being ready for the public.

Then again, Dreagan wasn't the public.

Kinsey managed to remain where she was, but she watched Ryder like a hawk. His fingers flew over the keys while his gaze was riveted to a screen. A few more punches of the keys, and he stopped to read.

Dmitri's brow rose as he looked at the screen. Kinsey watched Ryder's lips flatten. He keyed in something else in quick succession.

4 1/2 stars! Oh Ryder and Kinsey! How fun was this read. You see, this is second chance romance tucked inside this amazing paranormal series. They had got together before this series even started but when Ryder realized, oh wait, I can't tell you THAT. Three years have passed and their mutual talent with computers brings them back into the same room. What fun! Who can resist a good second chance romance? Certainly not me! I loved how they worked through the issues and rediscovered a passion that can't be ignored. Loved it! Truly I did. And Ryder, the lover of jelly donuts, found something he needs more. Hehe. The writing is still great with characters that I love. I sometimes want to slap a few of them and I really really want more details about a certain king of kings but I can't wait to read the next one. I need more and more. Mostly, I need to know how the enemies will fight it out. It's a puzzle that changes as more details are revealed and I really want to see the full picture. Soon. I hope. I'm reading on with this one and if you haven't found time to add it to your reading, you so should.

Ryder spends his days and nights staring at screens using his genius abilities with technology to hunt down Ulrik and keep his fellow Kings and their mates safe. But Ryder hasn’t always been holed up in the computer room. Years ago he was sent on a mission in Glasgow where he met and fell in love with Kinsey, a beautiful human who also has some masterful skills with technology. Their love for one another was mutual and they were happy up until Ryder left her broken hearted and confused. I have to admit for the majority of the book I wasn’t a fan of Ryder. I wanted to smack that sexy man upside his impossibly dense head. I don’t know if it’s all the time spent in a room filled with computers but Ryder really was clueless when it came to interpersonal communication skills. He was so wrapped up in his hurt over Kinsey running away from him after he shifted into a dragon in the middle of a battle (can you really blame a human from running off scared after seeing a dragon that happens to be her ex!) that he didn’t stop to think and mull over the fact that he was the one who initially doubted their love and up and left her with nothing more than a confusing note. You gave your soul mate a lame Dear John note and didn’t contact her for 3 years! I was VERY disappointed at how quickly he jumped to conclusions concerning Kinsey especially with all the obvious circumstantial clues. Eventually I got over my annoyance with Ryder thanks to Con coming in and talking sense into everyone. I’ve had disdain toward Con in the last few books but I have to say in this book he shined. It’s obvious why he is respected and why he is the King of Kings, now if he could just find himself a decent mate and stop his affair with the self absorbed Usaeil that would be awesome. Which brings me to Rhi. I’m still in the, I think Con was her former King lover camp, but I’m unsure even if that is the case if those two belong together. Her relationship with Balladyn is interesting and it’s obvious she’s changing him for the better and that may impact how the war with the Dark goes down once Taraeth is out of the picture. Rhi’s Reaper watcher is also someone who has me questioning who Rhi is meant to be with. He seems very drawn to Rhi in a significant way. I can’t wait for the next installment in the series. Perhaps book ten will be about the dragon that dislikes humans, Dmitri and we’ll see him battling his feelings for one. Copy provided for review. Reviewed by Joy for Crystal's Many Reviewers

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 3 Smoke & Fire is a little different story than our normal Dark King book. This is a story of a second chance at love. Ryder, our jelly donut loving dragon, whom we all love is reunited with the love of his life after many years. But there is something strange about the time of Kinsey’s arrival. Can she be trusted? Is she who she really says she is? And how far is Ryder willing to go to protect her and when back her love? As always Ms. Grant writes a story that makes us fall in love with the Dragon Kings all over again. But at times Ryder’s story seemed to drag on a little. I think that the events that happened in Smoke & Fire are going to lead to some huge changes in the Dragon Kings world. Rhi’s storyline is getting deeper and deeper. Balladyn is changing yet staying the same, which makes it really hard to like him, yet I don’t hate him as much. I can’t wait to see what is next in this series. What is next for the Kings, what is next for Balladyn, what is next for Rhi. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley & St. Martin’s Press in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

Reviewed by Annie and posted at Under The Covers Book Blog In the ninth book of the Dark Kings series, Donna Grant takes an unwilling and scared heroine in Kinsey and thrusts her back into the dragon world. Years before in Glasgow, Ryder and Kinsey were once lovers. But when the Dark Fae targeted Kinsey, Ryder had no choice but to change in front of Kinsey to protect her. Since then, Kinsey has stayed far, far away from Ryder, fearing for her life. But when a work order forces Kinsey to enter Ryder’s domain, she is once again hit with her feelings for him. Feelings that, in reality, have never truly gone away. Despite being scared for her safety, she is learning that her presence here isn’t the only thing that she needs to worry about. Someone wants Kinsey to be with Ryder again but they do not know who. Until they can figure that out, both Kinsey and Ryder must learn to deal with one another. Or risk falling more apart. Donna Grant makes coming back into this world very easy. I think that even if you haven’t read the previous books in the series, you can still find a comfortable place here. Each book has a solid romance but as I mentioned earlier, things are a little bit strained between Ryder and Kinsey. Kinsey is hurt that Ryder kept all these secrets from her. Furthermore, she doesn’t really know what to do with all this information. How does one live with a dragon? For her entire life, she had no idea dragons existed until she realizes she is in love with one! The dynamic between Ryder and Kinsey is very sweet. It’s almost like watching them fall in love again for the first time. The initial anxiety is there and the both of them are very unsure of what to do in this situation but I loved that both of them are willing to try! As always, Grant incorporates several of the other Dark Kings into this story. Con is present, which makes me happy because he seems to be my favorite. There is some mention of the Reapers, which is Grant’s other series but I just think that they something extra if you follow both series like me. SMOKE AND FIRE is another explosive installment to the Dark Kings series. If you’re a fan of dragons and accents, then what are you waiting for? Pick this series up!

A hot soap opera in book form featuring swoon-worthy dragon-shifters He yearned for something more. It could have been his. It had been his. Until he walked away. SMOKE AND FIRE by Donna Grant is the ninth action-packed installment in the author's Dark Kings series featuring her sexy Scottish dragon-shifters. Seriously, these dragons are dropping like flies. When dragon king Ryder was in Glasgow fighting the dark fae, he and Kinsey had fallen in love. But, Ryder walked away from their relationship putting Dreagan and his fellow kings first. He's had no contact with Kinsey for the last three years. Out of the blue, Kinsey shows up at Dreagan. SMOKE AND FIRE is a second-chance-at-love for the two. The romantic relationship and the development of the danger plot are mostly contained within this novel. Donna is very good about filling in whatever newbies would absolutely need to know to enjoy each book. However, there's so much that has happened previously in this series and in the related relatively new Reapers series that spills over into this tale, just know that if you are trying to read this installment as a standalone, that you may have times of being lost. Fans of the series will be captivated by all the plot complications, intrigue and goings-on within this installment. This is not a book for fans to skip as so much happens and there appears to be setups to what is coming. Even so, I'm still clueless as to exactly what that is and how it will play out. Rhi has been one of my favorite characters throughout this series and I'm happy to report that there's lots of Rhi herein. On the other hand, I am even more confused about what the heck is going on with Con. AND with Ulrik's powers? Is Ulrik a dragon king or what? Mikkel, Balladyn, Taereth, the Queen, a new powerful blonde bombshell druid, Henry and relative of his all play integral parts. I seriously need the next book now. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys paranormal urban fantasies. Donna's Dark Kings series is genuinely addictive. It's like a hot soap opera featuring swoon-worthy dragon-shifters in book form. I'm obsessed and I bet that if you start reading this series, that you will be too! Kinsey receives a job task that takes her to Draegon, a whisky brewery. When she gets there, she finds out that not only does it look like she was set up, but Ryder, her ex-lover who left without a word and, OH, turns out to be a mythical dragon, happens to work there. Now she will have to work with him to find out who set her up. From start to finish I loved this story. I really felt for Kinsey and everything she was going through. The same with Ryder. I also loved the overall plot in the series that was updated. I especially like how the author shook things up in the 4th part. I highly recommend. **I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review

This book is number 9 in the series of the Dragon Kings. You can read this book as a stand alone but I would not advise it. Ryder and Kinsey are the two main characters in this book and have a past with each other. Kinsey was heart broken by Ryder and three years later of not seeing him has to come to terms that she is still in love with him. Ulrik and Mikkel are always up to something and this time it is no different. I always find it cleaver how Donna comes up with ways that the 2 of them mess with people. This is a great addition to the series and it's always great to see the main characters work it out in the end. I look forward to more books in this series. *Gifted copy provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review* ** I would have bought this book anyways even if it wasn't gifted to me**

I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. This Smoke and Fire book has all the Smoke and Fire Part 1-4 included in this one. There is still a cliffhanger in it to lead us in the the next book. Also Smoke and Fire has several characters from previous series by Donna Grant. I have read the Reaper series and was able to catch up with what they are doing now. But I haven't yet read the other series so this really can be a standalone book. This is the story of Ryder and Kinsey. We find that three years ago Ryder was in a year long relationship with Kinsey but up and left with just a note for her to find. Smoke and Fire (Dark Kings #9) by Donna Grant fleurfleurfleurfleur Synopsis: She wanted to touch him. There had always been something about being in his arms that made her feel as if she could tackle anything and the world wouldn't dare get in her way... SWORN TO PROTECT A dragon shapeshifter and a computer mastermind, Ryder is sent to guard Glasgow after a devastating Dark attack. But when memories of an explosive affair come back to him-in the flesh-Ryder cannot help but want to protect the woman who haunts his dreams. Even if means shifting into the dragon he was never supposed to reveal... DRIVEN TO DESIRE Kinsey could never get enough of Ryder. His every touch only left her wanting more. But now that she's seen him in his true form, Kinsey's world is rocked to the core. She knows that to stay-and feel-alive, she must be with Ryder. But is Kinsey's passion worth the risk of danger that comes with being a part of Ryder's dark and fierce world? Review: Ryder, the tech guru among the Dragon Kings, and he has kept a secret for three years--he found and left the woman he loves and who is his mate. He has not told anyone this and no one has suspected it. Kinsey is also a techie with a tech firm and she had her heart broken three years ago when Ryder left without a word to her-just a note. She has put the pieces back together and is on her way to Dreagan to complete a work order for her company, unbeknownst to her is that Ryder is there. When she walks into his domain she is both shocked and afraid, for she knows what he is and he knows that she knows. Ryder must find out why she is at Dreagan for it is very suspicious. They never called in a work order. Along the way things are rekindled and Kinsey tries desperately to protect her fragile heart. She is suspected of spying and evidence comes to light that makes it appear that she is there to spy and has betrayed Ryder. Ryder wanted to win her trust and love back, but now he is the one confused and heartbroken. Things unravel and plots are discovered. New allies join the group and Rhi is still on the hunt for any information on the Reapers (much to the chagrin of her watcher). Things are coming to a head in the series, sub plots are merging, once known villains are starting to look like possible Byronic heroes, and Con's secret lover is close to being revealed to all. I look forward to the next one. Though I hate this isn't until 2017.

Great Read! I am hooked on the Dark Kings. Ryder is forced to reveal his secret to Kinsey to save her, a woman he had an amazing affair with and disappeared from her life with no trace. Kinsey is sent to Dreagon by her company, however when she arrives and comes face to face with Ryder, she know she was sent there for some other reason. The attraction between Ryder and Kinsey is still there but can Ryder trust her with his secret, is she still afraid of him? Action packed with plenty of drama and suspense and very steamy! Love this series!

Ryder and Kinsey! They couldn't be more perfect for each other! Both are computer geniuses. Their chemistry is off the charts. Angst and unrequited love galore! Secrets, lies, and more mysteries. I think at one point I wanted to smack my jelly donut eating Ryder! Lol! I felt a roller coaster of emotions with this one. I wanted too just scream at them both and say quit being so stubborn and admit that you love each other! I have so many theories running through my head and even still have no idea what the future is going to hold with the Dragon Kings. Kinsey fell madly in love years ago but Ryder shattered her heart and left her without a word. Then one night in Edinburgh years later all hell breaks loose and the streets are littered with death. Kinsey comes face to face with the man she thought she knew and is terrified yet feels betrayed. Nothing in the world is as it seems. So she did what any sane women would do. She ran from him. Even after all those years apart as soon as she sees him, all the sparks and emotions she has denied and pushed deep for so long come rushing back full force. Her hurt from his rejection and fear of the unknown have left thick bitter walls around her heart. Ryder will have to work hard to earn her trust and start trying to fix the hurt he caused her. While being at Dreagan, Kinsey realizes that it could have been possible for them to have the future that they had always talked about together, and it was his choice not to tell her the truth about himself. He could have come back for her, but he didn't. Years ago before any of the Dragon Kings had even known it was possible to find their mate, Ryder met his Kinsey. He longed to have a future with her but as enemies tried to expose them as dragons, he left behind the only women that he had ever loved and it tore him to pieces. He left her to keep her safe, but little did he know it didn't matter his enemies where closer than he realized. When he is given hope of having a second chance with her his greatest fear of all happens ... she runs from him. The Dragon Kings are in the middle of a war with the Fae and trust doesn't come easy. Humans are already watching their every move at Dreagan and Kinsey's arrival is very suspicious. Another betrayal could very well be the end to the Kings. Far more is going on than any of them realize. Rhi is finally finding her some much deserved happiness but it may just bring her more trouble and more pain in the end. Their enemies are close and seem to always be one step ahead. Ryder will have to let go of his fear and learn to trust Kinsey, even though the evidence looks damning. Torn from his loyalty to his fellow Kings and the love he once let go, he may realize too late her innocence and lose his chance at love with her forever.

SMOKE AND FIRE is the ninth full length installment in Donna Grant’s DARK KINGS paranormal/fantasy, romance series focusing on the Dragon Kings and the women they love. This is IT specialist Kinsey Burns, and Dragon King/computer mastermind Ryder’s story line. SMOKE AND FIRE can be read as a stand alone but for cohesion and backstory I recommend reading the series in order. There is a war approaching and the buildup has been ongoing for several installments. SOME BACKGROUND: The DARK KINGS is a spinoff from Donna Grant’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland. The Dark Fae and their King Taraeth, along with the Ulrik the Silver Dragon King and his uncle Mikkel have declared war on the Dragon Kings by exposing the dragon’s existence to humankind. The last wars between man and the world of the paranormal saw a great loss of life on all sides-but Ulrik wants revenge against King Constantine of the Dragon Kings; Mikkel wants to become King of the Silvers, and the Dark Fae want the Dragon’s hidden weapon, and to rule Scotland and the rest of the world. SMOKE AND FIRE overlaps with Donna’s new spin off series THE REAPERS who may be a potential ally with the Dragons Kings in their war with the Dark Fae. Told from several third person points of view SMOKE AND FIRE focuses on Kinsey Burns’s and her return to Ryder’s life. Believing she has been ordered to Dreagan on behalf of the IT firm for which she works, Kinsey comes face to face with the man (dragon) she once believed was ‘the one’. Three years earlier Ryder walked away from Kinsey without a reason as to why, leaving a broken hearted and shattered woman in his wake. Fast forward to present day where three weeks earlier Ryder revealed the true nature of his beast when Kinsey was attacked by the Dark Fae. What ensues is the slow rekindling of a relationship destroyed by the secrets Ryder was never willing or allowed to tell; and his fear that Con would have destroyed the woman that he loved. With Kinsey’s return comes thoughts of betrayal and heartbreak from the man who once held her heart and her soul. SMOKE AND FIRE continues to follow the building war between the Dragons and the Dark Fae; the Silver Dragon King Ulrik and his Uncle Mikkel; and their battle for supremacy over the King of Kings Con. Rhi returns to struggle with her feelings for the Dragon King who destroyed her heart, and the Dark Fae Balladyn who is willing to give Rhi everything that he can but not the man that she wants. Rhi’s ‘cloaked companion’ will let Rhi know that he isn’t about to end her life but continues to follow Rhi wherever she goes. Con’s dalliances with the Light Fae may place the King of Kings on the front page news, and threaten everything that he has worked for to protect the Dragon Kings. Donna Grant is slowly revealing the past, the present and the possible future for the Dragon Kings of Dreagan-their secreted lives; the hidden truth; the potential destruction of everything on earth if the Dragons go to war with the Dark Fae. Ulrik wants revenge against the man he once called a brother; and Con is willing to protect their secret at all costs. SMOKE AND FIRE is another story line that adds to the suspense of a possible war. The premise is engaging; the characters are heartbreaking and charismatic; the romance is a second chance at love. I can only hope that whatever Donna has planned for her Dragons is revealed shortly-
