Description: Nuclear medicine is one of the rather unique subspecialty fields in medicine dealing with multiple organ systems, and perhaps one that can understandably be quite difficult to get a good grasp of during medical school. This book provides a basic practical approach to commonly seen pathologies that must be diagnosed by SPECT and SPECT/CT. It includes instructions to access a website with videos, but I was unsuccessful in getting access.
Purpose: The authors' intent was to provide clinical guidelines for trainees and practicing physicians on the common diseases that need to be diagnosed by SPECT or SPECT/CT techniques. This book is indeed a great resource that introduces SPECT and SPECT/CT modalities to help them in their day-to-day practice.
Audience: The audience is radiology residents, general radiologists, and nuclear medicine physicians. It is appropriate for residents as well as general radiologists who may have ongoing exposure to basic SPECT or SPECT/CT imaging, but it likely does not have a viable audience among nuclear medicine specialists. There are a significant number of contributing authors, the majority of whom are well versed in nuclear medicine imaging. The editors appear to have chosen chapter authors based upon subspecialty expertise in the different organ systems.
Features: The book is divided into the fundamental and clinical application chapters, divided based on common SPECT/CT applications. The fundamental sections briefly introduce the principal quality control techniques and basic information on radiotracers' characteristics and biological behaviors that are essential knowledge for practitioners. The clinical application sections are divided into neuroscience, thyroid and parathyroid glands, cardiovascular, respiratory, neoplastic disease, skeletal system, pediatrics, and selected interesting cases. In general, the book approaches topics with good consideration of the intended audience in most of the chapters. The strength of the book lies in the interesting cases in the last chapter as well as the high quality of the images. The authors appropriately highlight the clinical pearls and pitfalls of using SPECT or SPECT/CT in most chapters. The most comprehensive sections are on the use of SPECT/CT for the thyroid and parathyroid and the ones on inflammation and pediatrics. The topics include almost all common cases physicians may encounter. The cardiovascular chapter, on the other hand, is less successful in accomplishing the mission of the book. Although it is clearly written, there is a lack of the quantitative information that needs to be included in myocardial perfusion reports. A similar lack is noted in the neuroscience chapter, such as on the topic of DaTscan. On the other hand, in the respiratory chapter, there is an extensive discussion of pulmonary SPECT/CT, which is not a common clinical application in daily practice.
Assessment: This book is comprehensive in covering all organ systems encountered in SPECT and SPECT/CT imaging. The book is nicely divided into fundamental concepts and common SPECT/CT clinical application chapters, and the images are of good quality. The authors have accomplished their goal and have provided a useful resource in a practical format for trainees and general radiologists for review of SPECT and SPECT/CT imaging.
