The Stanley Kubrick Archives by Alison Castle

The Kubrick files
From the archives of cinematic genius

In 1968, when Stanley Kubrick was asked to comment on the metaphysical significance of 2001: A Space Odyssey , he replied: “It’s not a message I ever intended to convey in words. 2001 is a nonverbal experience... I tried to create a visual experience, one that bypasses verbalized pigeonholing and directly penetrates the subconscious with an emotional and philosophic content.

Now available as part of our Bibliotheca Universalis series, The Stanley Kubrick Archives borrows from the director’s philosophy. From the opening sequence of Killer’s Kiss to the final frames of Eyes Wide Shut, it allows the masterful visuals of Kubrick’s complete films to impress through a sequence of compelling, mesmerizing stills. We uncover Kubrick’s creative process through fascinating archival material, including set designs, sketches, correspondence, documents, screenplays, drafts, notes, and shooting schedules.

Accompanying the visual material are essays by noted Kubrick scholars, articles written by and about Kubrick, and a selection of Kubrick’s best interviews. The result is a visual, archival, and scholarly journey through masterworks of 20th century cinema and the meticulous mind of the director behind them.

Kubrick. What more can be said? This filmmaker, Life photographer, made only a handful of films, but what a list! 2001: A Space Odyssey, Spartacus, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket, to name a few, are some of the iconic films in the last 50 years. This book goes into the nuances and back stories of the man and the legend. With personal notes, scripts, behind the scene photos and insights, this book will inspire you to look deep into how these films were a reflection of this man's vision and determination to create timeless films. Your library will be complete with the view of this man's creativity and work. I recommend this whole-heartedly. Five stars all the way!!!!!

Just essential for the Kubrick aficionado and more than worth the $1 I got it for in a Borders crazy markdown sale! Only criticism is some of the photographic reproductions could've been better.

This book is the ultimate homage to Kubrick and his work. I hesitated buying it at first because of the price, but finally just decided to get it. I was not disappointed. It's not a book that you'll finish in one sitting. If you love Kubrick's work like myself, then you'll enjoy reading the articles and looking at the behind the scenes footage. The 70mm film strip that it comes with is also very cool. I was worried I wouldn't get a film strip with mine, since I ordered it in November, but mine came with one. It is the scene of the flight attendants (actually close to the picture on Imdb.com of the flight attendant serving the other one who is watching TV). I was hoping for frames with HAL, Dave, or the bone being thrown up, but at least I got one. I think BN.com also has one of the best prices and free shipping.

This collection was a complete revelation for me. Far and away the most complete collection on the great man's work I've ever seen. Each page is a breath taking, awe inspiring jewel! This book just affirms my opinion that SK was an intellectual giant of the 20th century whose work will be appreciated for centuries to come. AND It comes with 12 frames of the greatest film ever made 2001! You must get this absolutely if you appreciate SK's work this book will treasured for many years. It weighs a ton though!
