About the Author

Texas artist, Ernesto R. Rodriguez, was born in 1935 in Quemado, Texas. At the age of 17 years, he was introduced to the penal system due to an altercation in which he defended his mother. His incarceration in various prisons ended in 1980 and was followed by an appointment in 1983 to the Wisconsin Governor’s Council on Hispanic Affairs.

Ernesto’s art education begun in prison via a correspondence course, where he was awarded a full scholarship, awarded on the merit of his drawings. He studied illustration, fine and commercial art, under the tutelage of Norman Rockwell and others. Eventually, his artistic talents led to pursuits as an art therapist and his own outdoor advertising company. He served for several years as a courtroom artist for several television news studios in Wisconsin and Texas.

Many of Ernesto’s paintings and drawings reflect “my social experiences and in some way they are a recording of my emotions as well.”
