I read this gem of a first novel about 20 years ago, and I still own it. I only save the books I loved, otherwise I would not be able to navigate my home! Over the course of the 20 years, I lent the book to two friends whose lives seemed to parallel some of the situations in the novel, and they both loved the book also. I am so happy to see "SALC" being reissued as an e-book -- buy it, read it, it is more than worth your money and time!

I am so happy that I discovered this book. It's rare that an author can balance poignancy with laugh-out-loud humor in such a delicate, moving way. You can't help but care about Franny and Michael. All of the characters are beautifully developed with unique, compelling personalities from the always-honest, hilarious Franny to the gorgeous (intimidatingly gorgeous from Franny's point-of-view), tragic Michael and the funny, sometimes heartless, often witty people who inhabit their world. A world you'll be glad to spend time in. I was supposed to meet a friend for dinner and called to cancel because I didn't want to stop reading. That's the power of a great story.

I loved this book when it first came out and I am thrilled that it's available as a Nook Book. It is brilliantly written: both heartbreaking and hilarious. It tells the story of a first love that runs off the rails in such a believable way, you will identify with it from the start to the end. And you will find the redemption exquisite. Linda Yellin's voice is truly original. I hear she has a memoir coming out, and I can't wait to read it. Don't miss this book. You'll be hooked!

Great love stories don't come along that often. From the beginning of the romance between Franny and Michael, right through to the heart-grabbing end of their sweet, at times incredibly funny, always poignant story, I was totally caught up in their love. The author's voice is charming and witty. The story is one you won't forget.

This story follows a young marriage over a ten year period and beyond, encompassing wonderful complex characters you can't help but care about. At times it breaks your heart and at other times you can't stop smiling from the heroine's great spirit and sense of humor. It's rare to find a book that's such a breezy read at the same time it pulls you in with profound insights and depth.

The author/narrator's voice is fresh, fun, and irreverent, which offsets the parts of the story that grab at your heart. Franny and Michael struggle to find their way through the two decades of their relationship that this story covers. He's a handsome ex-Marine, so handsome that she worries on their wedding day that more guests will be gasping over the groom than the bride; she's his opposite in many ways, something that both charms him (and the reader) as well as it confounds him. Tender and bittersweet, this story is delicious from beginning to end.

Beautifully written, this book is the answer for anyone who loves a Nicholas Sparks love story but wants something well-written! The witty dialogue; the perfectly rendered settings (starts out in a lunchroom of a college YMCA and you can just hear the clinking silverware and visualize the little cups of jello); the believable characters (all the characters, not only the sparkling Franny and more serious Michael) make this a breezy yet heart-wrenching romance.

I devoured this book. From page one I was in love with the characters and story. It's funny, tender, and heartbreaking. Franny is a great narrator. Her honest voice and observations and charming self-effacing humor carry you through this beautiful love story.

I missed my subway stop because I was so caught up in this story about two people who finally get it right just as they're running out of time. Would make a great book club read because of all the universal topics the story covers from finding the balance between your own needs as an individual versus being part of a couple; timing on having kids in a marriage and what happens when you're out of sync; managing the responsibilities os extended family members - but most of all this is a great love story, both funny funny funny and heartbreaking all at the same time. Great for anyone who needs a good laugh and a good cry.

A friend recommended this book and said "I don't want to spoil it - just read it." I read it in two days. The themes and topics are widespread and powerful but at its heart this is a moving, tragicomic love story written with great generosity and kindness toward its characters. All are flawed. All are tremendously honest and endearing. Especially Franny and Michael, the main characters. There is a lot to say but I don't want to spoil it - just read it.

This one snuck up on me. I set out to read a few pages to get a feel for the book and that was it, I was totally enchanted with Franny and Michael and their tender, sweet, often heartbreaking, story of two people who are trying their best. Alternating between funny dialogue and heart-wrenching honesty, this is a story that explores love in all its dimensions from initial enchantment right through the healing power of sacrifice. Franny grows up and learns about love and takes the reader along with her in an exquisite read.

The previous reviews of the book The Last Blind Date lead me to Such A Lovely Couple and I am glad I read it first. Reading Such A Lovely Couple helped me feel connected with the story in The Last Blind Date. Such a Lovely Couple kept my interest and toward the end was hard for me to put down.

I read this because I read the author's new memoir. The writing style hits every correct note from storyline, pacing, characterization and a splendid balance between the profound and the touching, all with the same razor sharp humor displayed in the memoir. THis book is supposedly a novel but the correlations between the background established in the memoir and here, as well as the strong voice and personality of Franny, the narrator and heroine, lead me to believe it is part one of a lovely journey told by a flawless writer.

This first novel embraces you from page 1 and does what the best of all good fiction can do: it makes you feel for the characters---through both heartbreak and wickedly smart humor-----and makes you think about love, marriage and relationships with a more enlightened eye.

The narrator is funny, honest and utterly engaging. She writes with an openness and charm that make this compulsively readable. As Michael, the former Marine who is first her boyfriend and then her husband, goes through his own changes we watch Franny become a lot wiser and a little sadder without ever losing her core ability to see the brighter, lighter side of life. It is that part of her personality that helps Michael when he most needs her and that makes this an extraordinarily touching and generous love story.
