Overview

Surreal Estate, a thinking man's Stephen King story, is both comic and macabre. Set on Cranberry Island in Maine, a writer and his wife retreat from the wild Hollywood success of his most recent book to regain their lives and bring a child into the world. A peaceful summer gives way to a relentless winter's blizzard and thus the negotiation of all of their isolated emotions.

A thinking man's Stephen King, Surreal Estate tells the harrowing tale of the Walseys, Dewey and Judith, who have moved from Hollywood to his old family cottage on a small unpopulated island in Maine; he to tackle a new writing project, she to wait out her pregnancy. Dewey brings his wife to Little Cranberry Island because he's trying to escape the madness of "Rainbow Sunset," the disastrous zillion dollar western epic he wrote. Judith spends summer and fall in her garden, nurturing her vegetables as enthusiastically as her soon-to-be-born child. She's never been happier. On the day of a monstrous early winter blizzard, just as their electricity goes out, Judith goes into labor, weeks ahead of schedule. At the same time, she takes a warm bath and tries to commit suicide by slashing her wrists. Alone against the elements, Dewey must minister to his wife's profound nervous breakdown, and also deliver their premature baby. Alternating the reigns of narration, Judith and Dewey each clarify their side of what really happened, unraveling the story of how they wound up in so dangerous and alarming predicament; even as the pieces of this comic macabre puzzle come together in a hair-raising finale.
