Overview

Swept Away by Robyn Carr

The emotional story of a young woman’s journey as she leaves behind all the things she thought she wanted only to discover who she really is. #1 New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr explores the challenges facing women today as they are valued for what’s on the outside rather than the inside. Enjoy this classic favorite, previously published as Runaway Mistress.

Jennifer Chaise is proud of her life. Coming from nothing, she’s used her beauty to her advantage and is swept up in a glamorous world of wealth and privilege as the mistress of a high-flying businessman. But when she walks in on a violent scene in their Las Vegas hotel room, Jennifer knows she can no longer ignore the truth about her boyfriend, and she flees. Desperate to escape the men searching for her, she invents a whole new persona—with a new look and a new name—as she hides out in a small Nevada town.

Working as a waitress in the local diner, she finds a mentor in Louise, a retired professor who takes her in. As Jennifer begins to embrace a new life, she realizes how much was missing from her old one: a sense of community and purpose… But it’s not easy to simply disappear. Her neighbor Alex is a cop, and while he’s friendly enough, he may also suspect that Jennifer is not what she seems.

Although she is under constant threat of being discovered, Jennifer is surprised to realize that, for the first time, she’s genuinely happy. Suddenly this real world is all she wants. But will it be enough when her past catches up with her?

I read this book previously as "Runaway Mistress", but I loved it even better with this updated version. I highly recommend!

I loved it! A beautiful and thought provoking story about women, the choices they make, and second chances. I enjoyed the love of community, acceptance and involvement. Robyn Carr continues to get it right. LA-TXN

Warning! Do not buy this book if you read Runaway Mistress a couple of years ago, this is a retitled reprint. I have enjoyed this author's community series books like Virgin River, Thunderpoint and so on. This was what I was expecting here and to some point it was what I got. There was a definite sense of community in the story and how that community rallies around each other. However, this was definitely more of a romance story than I was expecting which is not my usual preference. The characters were well developed and the plot line was nicely threaded. Unfortunately, I got a bit hung up on the heroine of the story and wasn't a big fan. She was raised by an unmedicated bi-polar mom who moved them around and was so unstable that she didn't connect to anyone or have friends. She then becomes a professional mistress to wealthy old men to support herself. Then we have the whole "reverse Pretty Woman" realization, that dating/sleeping with wealthy old guys that lavished her in material wealth wasn't all it was cracked up to be and she desired a simpler life. As much as I wanted to like the book, because of being a fan of the author I just couldn't. If you like a romance story and find the premise of the storyline works for you, then I would suggest this book. Otherwise, pick up one of her community series books as they are quite good.

This book is interesting until the end. The author leaves too many loose ends and rushes the conclusion. I felt cheated spending the time reading only to be dumped at the end.

I really don't appreciate being duped into buying "Swept Away" when I already have "Runaway Mistress" in my library. Shame on whomever is resposible.

I thank the above poster for cluing me into the fact that is is a repulished previous work that has been renamed. Why would i want to pay twice? I think it is terrible that publishers and authors mislead readers with this practice.

This is a republication of Carr's "Runaway Mistress", with a new title. The book itself is pretty good, but I don't like being mislead into buying a book I've already read.
