Tempted By A Rogue by Lauren Smith, Rafton Aleta

The rogue’s temptation would be her undoing…

Gemma Haverford knows exactly who she will marry: James Randolph, the man she’s had a secret understanding with for the last eleven years. With every letter written between them while he's been off at sea, their love has grown. Now they will be reunited with his return to England.

There’s just one problem. The man whose words she'd fallen in love with isn’t James at all…

Jasper Holland, a gentleman rogue of the first order, is trapped. Talked into a scheme by his best friend, he pretended to be James for eleven years as he wrote to Gemma, even though he'd promised James he’d break it off. But now with his return to England, his secret will come out – and he’ll lose the one woman he can’t live without.

What began as a game of words, now becomes a game of hearts, and Jasper will pay any price to call Gemma his.

Gemma Haverford is nearly on the shelf; she has been waiting for James Randolph for eleven years, while he was at sea. There was no lack of suitors, but James’ letters captured her heart. Gemma, James, and Jasper Holland had been childhood friends; Gemma has always been sweet on James, and then James and Jasper both left to join the navy. What Gemma didn’t know is that James had asked Jasper to write the letters for him, and to dump Gemma after a short while. Jasper had come to grow to like Gemma quite a bit, and was thrilled to receive her letters. James wasn’t too thrilled that Jasper had continued to correspond with Gemma, and when both men come back to England, James tells Jasper to compromise Gemma so he can be rid of her and marry the tart he recently met. Although TEMPTED BY A ROGUE is a bit of a spin on Cyrano de Bergerac, it is not a remake. James is truly despicable, and while Jasper is a rogue, he cares about Gemma, and what fascinating characters they all are. Ms. Smith’s lush descriptions of the English gardens are breathtaking, the dialogues are delightful and flirtatious, and I read and re-read several sentences several times for the sheer beauty of the Ms. Smith’s lyrical prose. In spite of it all, Gemma fights back; she is not a dishrag, and Jasper fights for her. The characters are extremely complex; this novella is enthralling. And I absolutely adored a secondary character: Lady Greenley, she of the menacing parasol. A fabulous story! I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I always love a sweet romance and the twist of Gemma not knowing which man she had been writing adds suspense and excitement. Gemma is loyal and romantic as she turns down offers for marriage to wait for a man she hasn't seen in eleven years. This drew my interest from the start because it is rare to think of someone waiting that long for someone to come back with such focus. The author did a excellent job of development of characters. Lady Greenley definitely had me laughing with her antics as the eccentric older woman who can get away with being nontraditional. James Randolph was definitely not the man for Gemma. To me, he was shallow, jaded and little mean spirited which wouldn't have mixed well with the gentle, romantic and sweet personality of Gemma. Gemma noticed right away when Jasper took over writing the letters but wanted to believe as anyone in love does that the change is because James matured. When she finally met Jasper and James in person, I felt like she instinctively was drawn to Jasper. I enjoy reading a happy ending and was very pleased to see Jasper win her heart without deception. Overall, good read for anyone who loves romance.

4 - "I never used to get faint until you showed up." Stars! There is one thing that I can whole heartedly say about Lauren Smith and the books that she writes, that no matter what the genre or tropes used they are always entertaining. I am not a massive historical fiction reader nowadays (although I had a sizeable Harlequin collection in my younger years) but the way the author tells the story, just pulls you in and keeps you invested in the characters and the adventures they go on. I loved Gemma and Jasper together, and as usual Lauren has given her heroine a bit of back-bone underneath her corset! Not the shy retiring type, she stands up to him, and when she discovers just how mislead she has been by him and James, and doesn’t give him an easy out in his courtship of her. ”I can’t concentrate when you are touching me.” Although only a novella, the author has also managed to give a full and detailed backstory to both of our lead characters, and Jasper’s was particularly poignant in light of his experiences at sea over the intervening eleven years. ”I’m not good at being respectable. I say things I shouldn’t.” Plenty of sizzle and sexy-times, make this novella another absolutely stellar addition to Lauren Smiths Historical titles. ARC generously provided by the author, and it was my pleasure to provide the above honest review.

A sweet and charming story! As soon as I started reading the first chapter of Tempted by a Rogue, it got me hooked till the very end; I could not put it down and I read it late into the night to finish it. Lauren Smith didn’t disappoint me with this beautiful love story! It's a real page turner! It tells the story of Gemma, who's been in love, for eleven years, with James, the man she was corresponding with. But her hero James, isn't the man he pretends to be! Will his secret identity be revealed? Will he lose the woman he loves dearly? Will she feel betrayed? Can their love survive under these new conditions? Again, their story is filled with passion, seduction and romance! I really love Lauren Smith's books and I strongly recommend her novella Tempted by a Rogue, you will love it and won't be disappointed!

How anyone could not be tempted and surrender to a story by Lauren Smith is beyond me! This author's latest novella, Tempted by a Rogue, was passionate and sweet with a bit of emotional ouch thrown in. Ms. Smith has a gift for showing the not so flattering side of her characters and yet still making them appealing. A hero whose actions on the surface were despicable, but upon further discovery prove him to be a worthy suitor, and the ultimate loyal heroine set the scene for a hard earned love. This novella is a great way to spend an evening and experience a touching story.

It was around 80 pages after all the other stuff in the book ..the chemistry was good for a short book..i loved the characters.. for being a short story she did an excellent job on this one! There was humor, passion and I absolutely felt there was nothing missing in this book except an epilogue..(but it does say the story continues??) short stories usually fall flat and there hard to pull off but I was amazed that this book was good..if you're looking for a quick read with humor, good love scenes that have a little spice, but not to detailed( I like erotic myself, but the author pulled the love scene's off in a way that worked because they had such great chemistry) this is definitely worth the read!

James is coming home! Her James, the childhood sweetheart Gemma waits to marry! He's been away at sea many years with his friend Jason. She's fallen deeply in love through his letters. And tonight they reunite, in her family garden, in secret! Is he the man for Gemma? Endearing and romantic with lively and engaging characters! Ended too soon. Good, quick read. 3 1/2 stars. Book free for honest review.

Lauren Smith has done it again. No matter which one of her books I pick up I am always happy I did. I loved Jasper, he is absolutely wonderful and I definitely wanted to punch James. I'm just glad she saw through to the real situation before it was too late. Please do yourself a favor and read this book!

Cute, sexy, sweet and romantic - a perfect read for an afternoon! Even though it's a novella, there is plenty of background information to form a history between the characters. Jasper and Gemma are perfect together, I really felt their attraction as well as their feeling for each other. Lady Greenley and Gemma's dad were both unique and fun characters that had me smiling. I received an ARC for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review, all conclusions are my own.
