Terror Comes Knocking by Aaron Paul Lazar is a terrific read. The marble induced flashbacks are so unique and extremely well done. To me, there is no greater terror than your child going missing, especially when that child is an adult. This book reflects the difficulty in getting authorities to take Sam seriously. Sam thus needs to take matters into his own hands and the results are spellbinding! As is common knowledge, I love these characters and I love this author. The real story is in the details and Lazar never misses any of them. A must read for all mystery fans, adding a bit of supernatural.

Readers who enjoyed the first Sam Moore mystery, Healey’s Cave, will be delighted to find that Terror Comes Knocking rejoins the Moore family without missing a beat.  Picking up where the first book left off, Sam is plunged into another string of adventures and mysteries involving his family.  Once again, Sam’s late brother Billy is part of the cast via the green marble. This mystery hits close to home in several ways.  Sam’s daughter, Beth, is missing.   Friends and co-workers are clueless as to her possible whereabouts.  Beth’s exotic roommate, Zafina, shows up with some rather surprising news about Beth.  Bewildered and concerned, Sam turns to his old friend, Senator Bruce MacDonald, for help.   Sam’s son, Andy, is still in Iraq, which is a source of worry to Sam, Rachel and Andy’s family.  Brother Billy communicates bits of information, but there are plenty of gaps to fill in and the story becomes more suspenseful.  Information gleaned by Senator MacDonald and an FBI agent reveals some serious contradictions in Zafina’s story.  Suspicions are raised and there is no shortage of suspects in this mystery.  A bomb explosion in town ratchets up the stress level, as several Arabic strangers are added to the mix….and the president is due to visit soon. Readers will be hard pressed to figure out the plots and subplots in this fast paced thriller before the president comes to town.  Sam is equal to the challenge, but will he be able to prevent a nefarious plot to kill the president and townspeople?   Although this is the second book in the series, it is complete in itself.  Readers will certainly want to read the rest of the Sam Moore Mystery series.  The books are fast reading and nearly impossible to put down.  They are recommended for summer reading, so get a hold of them all and be ready for adventure.

Excellent combination of large world themes and small town life Sam Moore is a loving father, generous friend, retired small-town doctor, and the owner of a truly amazing green marble. The marble is the source of very gently and deftly woven hints of the paranormal in Aaron Paul Lazar’s thought-provoking mystery, Terror Comes Knocking. It carries Sam, with the ghost of his long-lost brother as child-like guide, into different times and places where answers to his questions might be found. But understanding those answers proves as difficult as finding Sam’s errant daughter or getting in touch with his son, away at war. Sam’s also a doting grandfather and wonderful spouse. His love for his wife is beautifully real, built on shared history and loving memories, aging appropriately and overcoming all odds. And his love for his grandchildren fills this reader with smiles and memories of my own grandparents. Sam loves his garden too, and scented air rises from the page, redolent with foodstuffs waiting to be dug, iced with winter’s cold or warmed with spring. When daughter Beth fails to phone home, her room-mate Zafina comes to help out with Sam’s family. Neighbors look askance at the Middle Eastern girl in a time of terrorism and war, but surely nothing could happen in this small town, even if the President is about to visit them. And surely Beth’s friend can be trusted. Balancing human suspicions with genuine care, prejudice under its many guises with honest appraisal and love, and quiet mystery with some excellent and exciting action scenes, this novel’s a pleasing read that successfully brings international concern into small town life without overwhelming either. It’s the second in a series, but stands alone with no trouble and introduces some great characters with fascinating depths. Disclosure: I received a free ecopy of this novel from the author in exchange for my honest review.
