The 25
What Is the Secret of the 25?

It's the year 2022. In Boston, Massachusetts, the FBI is battling the 25, a mysterious and deadly extremist group that's targeting and assassinating the president's alt-right supporters.

Young special agent Reggie Jennings is assigned to infiltrate the terror cell. But Reggie's never been an undercover officer before, and his lack of experience shows. When sparks fly during a chance encounter with Gina Rozelli, the beautiful, but fiery, sister of one of the suspected terrorists, Reggie gets drawn into a dangerous game. He must play the part of the interested boyfriend, while constantly lying to Gina to keep his secret.

But as Reggie gets closer to his new love...and closer to piercing the veil of secrecy surrounding the 25...the tension mounts. Is the terrorist's sister the person she says she is? Or is she part of the group? And even if Gina is innocent, will she figure out Reggie's true identity in time to tip off her brother—before the FBI can capture him and stop the carnage?

In Ace Bryant's pulse-pounding debut novel, almost nothing is as it first appears. It's a chilling, post-Trumpian thriller with the year's most shocking twist ending.

About the Author

Ace Bryant is a veteran television producer and writer who has spent several years in the true-crime space. He’s currently writing the sequel to The 25, which will be published in 2020.

Q&A with Ace Bryant

Q: You’re a television producer, not a law enforcement professional. What made you think you could write a realistic crime novel that centered on cops?

Ace: I’ve been a producer of true-crime TV shows for the past 15 years or so, and they’re a very specific beast! My projects are generally police procedurals, and they’ve appeared on networks like Investigation Discovery, Oxygen, and the old Bio channel. Since I deal with cops—particularly detectives—on a regular basis, I’m aware of their language and terms. I often have to write voice overs using their specific “voices.” And after talking to enough of them over the years, and watching their interviews as I compose my scripts, I’ve got a pretty good handle on how they think, talk and act. Regardless, I was very comfortable writing the dialog and creating the specific scenarios used in The 25.

Q: The premise of The 25 is outrageous! How did you come up with it?

Ace: Ever since the 2016 election, I’ve had this strange, unsettled feeling that something has shifted in America. In the world at large, as well. For example, it was quite shocking to hear that more than half a million white supremacists were marching in Poland, of all places! And we’re seeing the same thing on the streets of America, too. Maybe not in such high numbers, but it’s horrifying just the same. Never, in all my darkest dreams, did I consider the possibility that Nazis would “become a thing” again. And yet, here we are. At the time I originally conceived The 25, most of my friends and I were scratching our heads trying to figure out what the hell happened. Where did we go wrong? And one morning I was in the shower (I know, cliché!) and an idea hit me that could provide at least a semi-rational explanation for what’s going on. And I figured the best way to share that idea would be to put it in the context of the crime thriller. After that, the main details of the plot came quickly, and overall, it was the easiest thing I’ve ever written. It only took eight months to complete the first draft.
