The industrial revolution brought about a tremendous change when warring nations were required to put millions of soldiers into the field to engage a foreign power in battle. The nuclear arms race that soon followed carried such a frightening consequence that leaders everywhere stepped back from the brink and sought negotiations with their former enemies.
